Artist History
Papakane have been gigging since June 99, although each of its members draws on vast experience in other musical projects.Singer Jon Houldsworth and Guitarist Nick Houldsworth, moved to Edinburgh from New Zealand at the end of 1997, regularly gigging as an acoustic duo.Midway through 1998, they teamed up with John Need, a bass player from Liverpool, and after a number of different combinations, welcomed Rich Jeffers onto drums in early 99'.Papakane was born..** APRIL 2000 **Rich left for OZ in March, so Papakane had to act quickly to find a new drummer. After a few rehearsals with Allan Cranston, the groove seemend to go in a different direction (positively) hence the reason we've gone back in to the studio to record it. Watch this space..... |

Press Reviews
It's always a good sign when you walk into a venue and there's no chairs left - especially on a Sunday night. This band of Scottish and New Zealand lads live upstairs from Bar Ce Lona (handy for lugging gear) and have quite a loyal following, for good reason. Lead singer Jon Houldsworth has a really strong, versatile voice that suits the tight funky sounds of the band. Perfect for the end of the weekend, they've got a great positive energy that makes this fortnightly residency one of the best free gigs in Edinburgh. Keep an eye out for them; they're bound for good things - especially if they keep handing out free well-produced demo CDs at the end of each gig! Red Hot Chilli Peppers fans will have a ball with these guys. Superb. Review by Tracy Griffen The List, Aug 5 '99----------------------------------Papa Kane is a four piece band from Scotland who have only been playing together since the beginning of 1999, but seem to have it all together pretty good. The song “Love Supreme” sounds a lot like Dave Matthews singing lead vocals for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on the verses, and for Jamiroquoi on the Chorus. “Burn” is a catchy little hook which marks Dave Matthews, Radiohead, The Beatles, among other influences. While “Sunday Morning”, which is my personal favourite and my choice for most likely radio single, follows after such bands as CCR, Dave Mathews (once again), Otis Redding, Live, The Doors, and the Verve. Papakane has a lot of potential, all they need to do is direct it toward Los Angeles, I’m sure that their music would go over very well in L.A.Great band for their style, I would love to listen to them on the radio, but I probably wouldn’t buy a CD (My brother would, though…)4 Stars **** Very Downloadable-------http://www.mp3.com/artists/37/papa.kane.html |
