Artist History
After five-plus years building a studio and recording trip-pop under the name Loquat, Kylee Swenson and Earl Otsuka realized they needed to get out of the house before they developed an allergy to the sun. Spending hours in front of the computer was fun, but it drove them to drink. It was also a good point for Loquat to expand. Through some luck, the duo (who both play guitar live) connected with drummer Christopher Lautz, bassist Anthony Gordon and keyboardist Ben Kasman to form the current lineup of Loquat.
Silke Tudor of the SF Weekly wrote about the band, "It's the combination of the superb musicians and their significant restraint that make Loquat so habit-forming." Of rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Swenson, Tudor adds, "[Her] lyrical imagery--consisting of childhood playgrounds and paranoid delusions--matches an elfin voice replete with breathy melancholy and sultry languor."
The editors at Listen.com were so impressed with the band's infectious songwriting that they included Loquat's "Half-Assed Mechanic" on the Listen Picks Volume II compilation CD. Their music on mp3.com has been downloaded more than 10,000 times and is featured on 25 mp3 radio stations.
Loquat played its first full-band show at a very packed Bruno's on Sept. 23, 2001 in San Francisco. Since then, they've played Slim's, Bottom of the Hill, Cafe du Nord, The Makeout Room, Spaceland (in LA) and many other San Francisco clubs.
If you like your bubbling indie-pop to make you swoon like a dizzy schoolgirl on designer drugs, Loquat is it. File the band next to The Sundays, Bjork, The Cardigans or Komeda. Stick it to the man, and dig Loquat.
The band's first EP, The Penny Drop, is now available in Bay Area record stores. A ten-inch vinyl release with new songs and a remix, titled Fall, is also available on Dreams by Degrees records as part of its seasonal four-part series (www.dreamsbydegrees.com).
