Artist History
In a region full of Bluegrass and Country bands, it is rare to find a band that plays original Rock. Gear is one of the few. Gear has a unique sound best described as Alternative Rock. Their songs are written around melodic vocals, heavy guitars, and pounding rhythms. In a day and age where everything is either hip-hop or rap-metal, Gear is staying true to its roots by playing straight up Rock. Gear was formed in August of 1997, in Glasgow, Kentucky when friends and schoolmates Chad Lockhart and Wade England began jamming in a garage on the outskirts of town. A couple of weeks later, Jacob Richey was added on drums and Curtis Wilson joined in on bass. Gear immediately began to play local parties as a cover band. Soon after, they started writing their own songs and gigging in the Bowling Green bar scene. After a year and a half together Gear went into the studio and recorded a demo CD entitled Second Face. Produced by David Barrick, Second Face contains six aggressive and emotional tracks. With the demo selling well at shows and local record stores, Gear continued to play shows in the area while receiving attention from local publications. A few months later, Jacob Richey left the band for personal reasons. Gear then acquired long time friend of the band, David Robbins, on drums. With the new line-up and a rekindled fire for the music, Gear began to write more original material. Gear’s music draws from many different styles and backgrounds. There is input from every band member on each song because each member of the band has a unique array of influences to draw from. These influences make Gear a very close-knit, multi-dimensional band. In March of 2000 after winning the Battle of the Bands at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, Curtis retired from the band. Wade took over bass duties and Gear decided to continue on as a three piece band. Gear continues to play bars and clubs in the region and has a devoted fan following, known as “Gearheads”. With an intense --- as well as loud --- live show, and a style that is unique from most of the music in the area, Gear hopes to be around for a very long time. Pouring everything that they have into their music, Gear focuses on their long-term goals: making good music and garnering a recording contract. |
