Kirok "s/t" CD 7/10 - [self-released]  Holy Shit...this entire EP was composed, performed, and recorded by one person! And I'm not talking about some simple little project. This sounds like the work of a full band! And a damn good band at that! Guitars, bass, vocals, live drums… it's all here, and it all sounds fucking 100% professional. All of the instruments sound great, the mix is nice and clear, etc. Amazing. This is one talented dude. As for the music, it's really hard to describe. There's definitely what I would have to call an indie rock/post-hardcore sort of flare (for lack of a better term), but it's much darker and not at all contrived. Think huge, pounding percussion, driving basslines that stray from mirroring the guitars, complex riffs that layer several panned guitar parts that work in unision, and unique singing vocals (sort of high-pitched, but not over the top). Everything is very rhythmic, from the curious acoustic guitars of the bleak and emotional "Paranoid Smoke", to the rockin' odd timed aggression of "Denial", and then some. Black Sabbath is cited as inspiration (among a rather curious list of artists), and I can definitely pick out a Black Sabbath vibe at times, be it the vocal treatments or just the atmosphere - there's a little bit of that 70's rock type of thing going here and there, but executed in a completely unique way, so don't go expecting fuzzed out solos or any of that shit because you won't find it. No lyrics are included and the layout is quite minimal, but it works. Most of the lyrics are fairly easy to make out, though I'm not quite sure what's going on as things seem a bit abstract. Very nice work overall. I'd love to hear more from Kirok, hopefully something else will surface in the future… Running time - 27:42, Tracks: 6 [Notable tracks: Blood From Stone, Paranoid Smoke] Kirok - http://www.obtusemule.com
