Artist History
Alma Negra, literally means "black soul", however in the Latin world it is sometimes used to represent a more sinister element, translated as "dark spirit". Either way, this band utilizes the best of both translations to provide a new style of Afro-caribbean music, playing modern Afro-Cuban son, cha-cha, descarga, guaguanco, timba & songo, with a grounbreaking NY attitude similar to that which created Salsa in the first place!
Given Alma Negra's diverse make-up, with members from as far away as the Philippines to almost every latin-Caribbean island, and Tennessee (smile), their respective cultures and musical interests are all well represented musically. So be prepared to hear merengue, bachata, balladas, boleros, cha-cha's, rock en espaņol, samba, bossa nova, jazz, reggae, soca/calypso you name it. Alma Negra seeks the enlightened music listener who can appreciate a wide variety of music, as well as the joe-schmo who just likes to hear a good beat. Hearing this band live makes you wonder, just how many albums do they have out!? |
