Artist History
The Marianna Prosperity started out as a three piece band from Pittsburgh called Elven. This band featured the talents of Jim Hufnagel (drums), Cory Matchett (bass), and Corey Ballard (guitar, vocals). They had played shows in Pittsburgh with local bands. They had even once played a very memorable show in Meadville, PA with Rainer Maria and the Pseudo heros. After they had (unknowingly) played they’re final gig in the fall of 1999, they split up for no apparent reason. Ballard dropped out of college and drifted away to concentrate on visual arts. Hufnagel and Matchett went on to start the experimental band The Affected and run Hufnagel’s recording studio (Big Boot Studios). Eventually (and out of necessity), Ballard started writing songs. He wrote about the recent past, the people he had left behind, and more specifically, he wrote about a single trip to Niagra Falls that he had taken with some friends before he left school. This experience would turn out to be the theme for the Salvage EP. He recorded some 4 track demos of these songs. It was in the spring of 2000 that Ballard started writing with his new friend Chip Harrington, a young veteran of the local hardcore scene. That winter, Ballard approached Hufnagel about recording some tracks for a studio project. Always interested in recording jobs, he agreed to not only record, but play drums on the project. By the spring of 2001 they were writing for the Salvage EP based on Ballard’s demo tapes. Matchett was asked to play bass on the album. It was while on a trip home from a friends house that Ballard and Harrington decided to become a band. At the time of they’re conversation they were getting off the Marianna/Prosperity exit on I-79 and driving through prosperity. Now they had a name. During the recording, Affected frontman and studio partner moved to San Francisco to pursue his interest in filmmaking. This left Hufnagel and Matchett free to devote more time to the new project. The Salvage EP was completed late that summer. The Marianna Prosperity is now booking shows, getting local airplay and practicing like crazy. They are constantly writing and progressing their music. They’ve come together as a band and are excited to be doing what matters to them most, making and playing music.
