Artist History
Chorus Breviarii (Choir of the Breviary) San Diego
is a weekly study and prayer group established in
January 2001, undertaking an inquiry of the
traditional rites and offices of the Roman
Breviary and its chant. The group is guided by
John Polhamus, a liturgical musician experienced
in the traditional rites and offices of the 1962
liturgical books now re-approved for use since
1984. Though often relegated to concert
performances, Gregorian chants are, in reality,
inseparable from Church at prayer. Tenebrae and
the Office of the Dead being the principal large
liturgies of the year, the institution of
frequent Sunday Parish Vespers - as
encouraged by the documents of the
second Vatican Council - represent
the majority of the year's activities.
Gregorian Chant, a form capable of
endless refinement, is also accessible
to the most untrained of beginners. If your
spiritual aspiration is to pray in this way,
don't hesitate to join us. Men are particularly
encouraged to participate due to the requirements
of liturgical function, but invitation is open to all.
There is no fee for attendance, but nominal expenses
will be incurred for the provision of music. Chorus Breviarii
San Diego meets on Monday evenings from 7 to 10 pm at:
St. Maximilian Kolbe, Roman Catholic Polish Mission
1735 Grand Avenue (West off I-5), Pacific Beach,
San Diego 92109.
