(Bastards of Glory: Demo)
(Self-Released Demo)
(9 out of 10)
(2001)
Rock n' Roll is alive again in this energetic, fast-paced four-song demo self-released by San Diego's own Bastards of Glory. Okay, so rock n' roll never actually died, but this release definitely brings back the driving force that is Rock. A lot of bands can bring the Rock, but not many can keep it going, even for four songs, but Bastards of Glory show that it isn't hard for them. From the opening riff of "Tianna Marie," Bastards of Glory delivers quality punk n' roll, with sing-along choruses and mosh inducing music; you will be tapping your foot in seconds.
The music of Bastards of Glory sounds share's much in common with Rancid's "Let's Go" album with lead singer Jimmy Lilly's voice sounding eerily similar to Lars Frederiksen, although Lilly's is a bit cleaner. While BOG's lead singer/bassist Joe Lilly is no Matt Freeman, he definitely stands his own. And the drumming by Rob Alexander has found that all elusive noticeable sound, but still not overshadowing the music quality.
The first song, "Tianna Marie", starts with a guitar riff and drums growing increasingly loud, and continues to build to an all out rock. An energy filled opening song, "Tianna Marie" sets the tempo for the demo, and even got me yelling "YEE-HAAWW!!!" along with Lilly.
The next song is called "Lemmy Go", and is a song all teenagers can relate to as Lilly comments on gaining independence and grasping that first taste of freedom. Driving guitars and up-beat drumming with a sing-along chorus of "Lemmy Go" make this song the probable favorite for many.
Bastards of Glory continue the energy with the third song, "Drop Dead Gorgeous". Bringing out the old school rock from the 60's and mixing it with punk rock, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" shows off their ability to give the same amount of energy to a slightly slower song, and also their skills on their respective instruments.
The last song, "When I'm With You," doesn't have the speed of the first two songs, but manages to take a song about love and get people up and jumping around. With a tambourine in the background, this song is closer to pop-punk rock n' roll than the others on the album, however "When I'm With You" has become my favorite song on the demo because it shows their diversity while never letting up on the energy.
Pure punk n' roll is the "label" I would give it if I had to, but if asked about the sound, I would say it just Rocks. Bastards of Glory are currently rocking out shows in the greater San Diego area, and finishing their debut CD, which will most likely be self released. A website is in the near future, but for now you can download some songs from their site on mp3.com.
With this four-song demo, Bastards of Glory show they can rock out with the best of them, but the challenge will be to continue the energy throughout an entire album, and if they are able to do that, we may have one of the best albums to come out of San Diego.
