Jory Vinikour was born in Chicago in 1963. After harpsichord studies in the USA with Lionel Party and Charlotte Mattax, he was awarded grants from the Fulbright and Frank Huntington Beebe Foundations to study with Huguette Dreyfus and Kenneth Gilbert in Paris. First Prizes in the International Harpsichord Competition of Warsaw (1993) and at the Prague Spring Festival 1994) opened the door to a concert career of considerable diversity.Recital appearances have brought him to many of the world‚s famous festivals and concert halls : Prague Spring, Besançon, Deauville, Cleveland Museum of Art Gala Series, Théâtre des Champs-Elysees, Musée du Louvre, Salle Gaveau, Radio France, Dresden Musikfestspiele, Vigo (Spain) Festival, etc. as well as concerts in Asia and Latin America. Jory Vinikour has been concerto soloist with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Grenoble Chamber Orchestra, Flanders Opera Philharmonic, Ensemble Orchestra de Paris, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and he is the frequent soloist with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. His concerto repertoire includes works by Martin, Martinu, Nyman, and Poulenc. One of the few young harpsichordists to interest himself seriously in contemporary music, Mr. Vinikour was the winner in 1987 of the Contemporary Music prize at the Paris Harpsichord Competition. He has since been featured soloist on series such as Festival Présence (Radio France), 38e Rugissants (Grenoble) and Het Clavycymbal in Utrecht. Increasingly known as an accompanist, Jory Vinikour has appeared in recital with such artists as Annick Massis, Anne Sofie von Otter, Magdalena Kozena, and Hélène Delavault (for whom he arranged the music for her one-woman Baroque cabaret, "Le Mot et la Chose" for the Théâtre de la Ville). As a continuist, he has appeared in innumerable concert halls, opera houses, and recordings, notably with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre, as well as with conductors such as William Christie, Daniel Harding, René Jacobs, Graeme Jenkins, and John Nelson. Jory Vinikour is also heard (but not seen) in the Merchant/Ivory film (and Angel/EMI soundtrack )"Jefferson in Pari". Most recently, Jory Vinikour's recording Bach's Goldberg Variations for Delos International was named by the Chicago Tribune's critic, John von Rhein, as one of 2001's ten best classical CD's. Upcoming projects include recitals with violinist Rachel Barton, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, and a concert and recording of Frank Martin's "Petite Symphonie Concertante" with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the direction of Armin Jord

    Press Reviews
THE GUARDIAN: "Vinikour, whether enveloping Rameau's Aricie in tendrils of consoling sound, or turning the prelude that heralds Semiramide's arrival into an appealing nocturne - was exemplary throughout and the absence of a band wasn't felt." CHICAGO TRIBUNE "The prize-winning harpsichordist offers here as satisfying a disc of Baroque keyboard music as you will hear (Bach’s toccatas for harpsichord). " - named in the top ten classical CD's of 1999" EL NORTE: "El triunfo de Vinikour fue total. No hubo pasaje que escapara a su puntual virtuosismo y a su extrema musicalidad." Vinikour's triumph was total. There was not a passage which escaped precise virtuosity and his extreme musicality. " CLASSICA "Cette intégrale est l'une des plus belles parues à ce jour." "This complete recording (Bach’s toccatas for harpsichord) is one of the most beautiful to appear up until now." (Michael Nyman’s Concerto for Harpsichord and strings) CHICAGO TRIBUNE "His subtle rhythmic inflections and boldness of ornamentation over a firm metrical pulse triumphs in every respect." His playing excites the ear," L’EST RÉPUBLICAIN: " le récital qu'a donné Jory Vinikour a litteralement époustouflé tous ceux qui se passionnent pour cet instrument remarquable qui est le clavecin" " Jory Vinikour's recital literally flabbergasted those who are passioned by the remarkable instrument which is the harpsichord."
