Artist History
iRiS is a 4-Piece power-pop/rock band from Victoria, BC, Canada, led by the creative team of vocalist Ellen Williams, guitarist Jonathan Williams, drummer Carson Ogland, and bassist Ian Bartlett. From their beginning in 1999, iRiS has been recording, writing, and playing live up and down Vancouver Island with a vengeance. What makes iRiS unique amidst the plethora of bands out there is their diversity of music and most importantly, the relationship between the four of them. They are all friends with the same hard work ethic and are all devoted to making music a career.
When taking the stage, iRiS play their hearts out and develop an entrancing relationship with the audience they're performing for. iRiS has been quoted as being a "killer live act" and "a hot new talent" (Andy Reinhardt of Vertigo Night Club, 2001). In early February 2002, Victoria had it's first independent music awards, namely the M*POWER Awards, with iRiS winning "Best Stage Presence" and "Best Female Vocalist". Not bad, considering the fact that iRiS was nominated for a total of 4 M*POWER Awards including "Best Artist" and "Best Songwriter" and were up against some very competitive bands including The Special Guests, Jeffery Sez, Johnny Action Figure and Carolyn Mark and more.
iRiS has been testing the elusive waters of fame by earning opening spots with the reunited Grapes of Wrath and opening for Canada's leading male rock artist Edwin. iRiS has also shared the stage with Colin James, Spirit of the West, The Special Guests and 54-40 at Providence Farm in Duncan for 89.7 SUN FM's first Birthday Party in front of nearly 2,000 fans. iRiS is also getting a great deal of air play on most of Vancouver Island radio stations including 89.7 Sun fm which has their song "Understated" in a 2-spin-per-day rotation with "Intervene" receiving a 1-spin-per-day, making iRiS the first independent/local band that has had their music placed in heavy rotation. Victoria's most popular radio station 100.3 The Q chose iRiS to be a part of their yearly music contest "Rocktoria" which features the top 4 band of Vancouver Island. This year Rocktoria will not only put iRiS heavily on the airwaves but also will also release a "Live" CD after recording iRiS during the Rocktoria concert that happened on July 21 at Centennial Square downtown Victoria.
Now with plenty of successful performances and a full-length CD entitled "Exit To Reality" (which has been called "the best local recording I've ever heard" by Cam Drew, General Manager of 89.7 SUN FM), iRiS has left Victoria and crossed the water to the mainland and is preparing to break into the Vancouver music industry.
