Artist History
I have been seriously playing out in the Cinti. area for over 10 years in various cover and original acts, basically just trying to sing as much as I could to improve my voice and musicianship. I’ve done back-up singing for the misogynist boy-group thing, the female-fronted alterno thing, the girl group thing; I even did the wedding band thing which was hysterical as well as actually being a great learning experience-- (no rehearsals, just show up with charts and play with different musicians every week.) All the while I was also involved in writing music. My first experience writing music was in jjaR which I joined in 1993. In that band, I wrote collaboratively. most often writing the lyrics and co-writing the music. When jjaR broke up in 1998, I guess I got a little more assertive and decided to take more control over the music I was playing and writing. If I was going to sing covers, I wanted to cover artists that I genuinely respected and was inspired by. As for writing, I decided to take a stab at writing my own stuff. Hence, “The Perils of Iva” |

Shepherd's 'Perils'
Singer Annette Shepherd, one of the finalists at this year's 97Xposure local artist competition, is celebrating the release of her debut album, The Perils of Iva, at Carol's Caf, downtown on Main Street, on Saturday.
Shepherd's special guest will be DJ Boom Bip.
Admission is free with a CD purchase.
Shepherd was previously known as Annette Rogers, lead singer for the local group Jjar, which broke up in 1998.
As a solo artist, Shepherd eschews the Bar-Rock sound of her previous work for a lush, dreamy Pop sound.
Perils would appeal to fans of local faves Over the Rhine with its airy yet organic feel and Shepherd's lilting, radiant singing voice.
The opening cut, "Live It Up Girl," sets the ethereal tone of the album, with its tremolo-guitar and Modern Rock elements dancing serenely with Shepherd's shimmering melodies.
There's a melancholic mood to the album, but lyrically and melodically Shepherd's mostly-love-storied songs have a hopeful, optimistic quality mixing with the sad swirl.
Other standout tracks include the Trip Hop-like, slippery, fretless bass-laden "Better Day" (which is reminiscent of Goldfrapp) and the torchy, piano-driven "Womb and Hearts." Shepherd's atmospheric, incandescent Pop songs make The Perils of Iva the local chill-out album of the year. |
