Artist History
Formed in May of 1992, Pithecanthropus Erectus never did all that much until recently. They've gone through about 6 lineup changes and two past members are now tragically deceased (original singer White Chocolate Negro and one time keyboardist Chakka Condom.) In late 1999, they decided to record 12 songs they could remember that day. They had to record by themselves because the engineer at a local studio kicked them out after they masturbated all over the recording console. The band has played a total of three shows (all modestly attended) in a decade. They might play another one soon, but don't bet on it. |

Press Reviews
"Seeing Pithecanthropus Erectus (oddly named after a Mingus song) live is a frightening experience. Apparently, this was their first show, but they approached the stage like confident veterans. Their brief set (about 15 minutes long) started with a screeching wall of feedback while the singer (a gigantic afro-american man named White Chocolate Negro) gargled water into a distorted microphone. From there on out, they blasted through 30 second songs with strings and cymbals breaking left and right. They were tight when they were focused, but at one point, one of the guitarists ran into the parking lot to get his motorcycle only to drive it through the audience. However, the final 3 or so minutes of the show were the cathartic climax. White Choc ate the mouthpiece of his microphone, the guitarists started throwing their amps at each other, the bassist started twitching uncontrollably, and the drummer took his drums piece by piece and threw them out on the street. They quickly left the stage (and their mostly broken instruments behind) and got the hell out of that place while everyone there immediately knew they witnessed something legendary. If this band somehow manages to play again, you definitely don't wanna be the dork who passed up on it! -A. Carter, the Westword 1993, in response to PE's debut show at 'The Warehouse': April 20, 1993 |
