Wormwood
Takehold CD
The moment you hit play, you'll be at Fewleftstanding's mercy. Wormwood manages to engage in a volatile battle between hardcore and metal. Mix the ruthless aggression of The Hope Conspiracy, the maniacal intensity of Darkest Hour, and the raw energy of early Coalesce circa Give Them Rope, and what you have is an album that is widely diversified.
Usually hardcore/metal albums get monotonous after awhile; this clearly isn't the case here. Not only is the heaviness present from start to finish, but Fewleftstanding constantly incorporates new elements and surprises in each song to make Wormwood an exciting listen. They are by far not a technical sounding band, but "What's the Use" starts off sounding very much like Dillinger Escape Plan's "43% Burnt." Interesting indeed.
Atheists beware. The lyrical substance of the songs encompasses religious overtones, openly revealing their love of the Lord. Fewleftstanding's website states that most of the songs are "90% scripture/10% inspired." On "What's The Use" it's apparent they stand firm on their beliefs: "If I live I live for Him / If I die I die for Him / Take up your cross and follow Him not the sheep." Well, it looks like I won't be yelling along with the lyrics, but that doesn't mean I don't find this an amazing record, 'cause I do. Listeners open-minded enough to handle the religious subject matter will be surprised to find this original and fresh sounding as well.
Takehold did a phenomenal job on the packaging and layout of Fewleftstanding's second album, as they do with all their releases. Every aspect of Wormwood is astonishing—well almost. There's definitely more to be desired lyrically, but the sense of maturity within the songwriting makes this album stand out.
