Artist History
Considered by some to be the 21st Century's answer to Jimi Hendrix, King Live-D (David Aaron Fisher) was born April 8th, 1974 in South Central, Los Angeles. His mother, a Korean War refugee, instilled in him a love of music and art from an early age. Surrounded by the dichotomy of his two brothers, one a member of the notorious LA gang, the Crips and the other a career Army officer, Live-D found his sanctuary in the guitar.
Taking advantage of LA's Magnet School bussing program at the age of 10, Live-D allowed himself to influence and be influenced by his predominantly white school mates in San Fernando Valley's Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies. Acquiring a taste for visceral rock music, classical and virtuoso guitar. And giving them a taste the streets he hailed from with hard-core Hip-Hop, R&B and Funk. He quickly became the desire of local bands. Either to be recruited as guitarist or to give lessons to whomever was. Studying guitar, piano, classical and jazz music even teaching class on occasion, he received several awards for his school performances.
At 17, King Live-D finally moved from the ghettos of South Central LA but found himself faced with trouble in a staunch republican Southern Orange County, CA. And was not as quickly met with the acceptance he felt in LA's suburbs.
He soon found solace in the more liberal Laguna Beach community where he met other artists and musicians who were more accepting. Including the now Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins who he befriended after meeting at a local music store. Live-D found himself running into popular O.C. bands like Sugar Ray, No Doubt and Sublime who have all since become widely successful rock acts.
Charged with energy of seeing these acts Live-D began assembling his own bands, taking on the roles of guitar, vocals, bass, drums and keys. After a few performances he was once again well sought after even landing an independent record deal with a local studio. King Live-D gained popularity co-authoring songs and playing guitar for the local alternative act Rogue & the Mood and received countless Jimi Hendrix comparisons. He'd often sit in with area favorites Derek & the Diamonds and Byron & the Bordeaux's allowing him the indulgence of raw funk, R&B and black oldies. Known for his over the top, bombastic style of blues guitar solos he was nicknamed "Bullet" by the band regulars.
Intrigued with San Francisco's rich music & art history, Live-D moved there in '97 at 23. Confident in his guitar abilities and musicianship he sought to learn the ropes of the studio. He was quickly taken under the wing of Producer and retired independent label owner, Paul Godwin, after taking an interest in King Live-D's song writing, arranging, and guitar skills. Blessed with this opportunity, he spent countless hours, even days on end, at the Bay Area's famous Fantasy Studios, writing and producing music for commercials, movies, TV, video games & re-mixes. He also began co-managing Godwin's indy label, NewDog. Handling the day to day particulars of production, distribution, radio and placement. At 24, in an effort to
garner exposure for the labels acts, Live-D founded the Ambient Brunch tour. A tireless effort, for which he booked, promoted, marketed, tour managed and performed. "We just wanted to have some fun, sell a few records. None of us had been on tour before so Paul (Godwin) and I said let's do this!" Says Live-D, of what he thought would be a modest independent, DIY tour. In a short time the tour gained so much press and street attention that larger indy labels sought to add their acts to the roster. This extended the tour from its original Western U.S. tour path to the rest of the country and on to Canada, Brazil and Venezuela. He also picked up sponsorship from MP3.com, KCRW, Odwalla Juice, XLR8R Magazine and LA's Ritual Events. By the tours' end, it had included artists from the US, Brazil, the UK, Venezuela and India. It made money, increased album sales and sealed friendships.
King Live-D spent his sparse time away from the studio and the label performing in SF's local venue's and always writing new
material. Live-D also began serving on the SFSU poetry discussion panel after being approached by the University's teaching staff. Live-D was flattered finding that SF State Literature students had been studying his unpublished poetry.
After four years in San Francisco, K.L.D. returned to his native Los Angeles. Tucked under his belt, the experience of working at Fantasy Studios, running a record label, founding a successful international tour, innumerable recording credits, and critical acclaim from press and peers. In pursuit of securing his recording career, D has begun seeking a label while producing demos of his original music a fierce blend of hip-hop, R&B, and tripped out guitar explosives that he's
dubbed "Heavy Ghetto" music. "I see myself playin' for a diverse crowd. I don't wanna exclude anyone. My success is immanent and I'll work my ass off to prove it. I've been given a gift and I think god would be pissed off if I didn't use it"
