Artist description
Vocalist, poet, lyricist, screenwriter, author--Devian Starr is undeniably a dynamic artist, who cannot seem to escape being compared to the icon David Bowie. His songs are introspective, angry, raw, vulnerable, passionate. His music knows no genre limitations--he reinvents them, creating a sound all his own. He has built a substantial following in the Midwest, East Coast and now on the West Coast of the United States. Preferring to remain underground, he rebukes mainstream acceptance--although his sound becons all.
Devian, a Detroit native, began his career in music at the age of 15 with a performance art group called "K.K. Souflee". Based primarily as a collaborative entity, members came and went and the sound morphed from avante gard noise to acoustic, experiemental folk rock. The group was reinvented with his cousin and writing partner Erika Batten on guitar. Together, they were able to build a cult-like following under the name "Ginko Trigger".
In 1997, Devian began working on various solo projects with the amazingly talented singer/songwriter/producer/engineer/guru J.C. Unger. Their work continued until 1999. Together, Devian and J.C. amassed many hours in the studio, producing several albums worth of material. In April of 1999, Devian unleashed his debut EP, "James Is Dead", to his ravenous fans. The album contained such songs as the notorious "Prick" and the much-adored "Numb". In 2000, Devian released the haunting EP "Human", which contained the lost "James Is Dead" track "God In My Eyes".
However, the millenium marked a new path for the artist. Deciding to express more facets of his art, Devian retreated from the stage and studio. In the last two years, he has written two film scripts, one novel and compiled a book of lyrics and poetry.
Currently, Devian is planning the release of "THE MARTYR'S MANIFESTO", an album containing three songs from the EP "James Is Dead" plus three tracks from the unreleased album "The Meat Sweater Method". "Human" will round out the seven song track list.
For now, he enjoys life in Southern California.
