Artist History
SHORT BIO
Formed in 1995. Has recorded plenty of demo tapes (17) but not many
have been released. MALEFICIO is NOT a sell-out band like C.O.F. and 99% of the
black metal bands that exist today. We play music that we like and if you dont like it
dont listen to it.
LONG BIO
The Swedish band Maleficio started back in 1990 under another name when
Daniel Johannesson (guitars & vocals) and Peter Derenius (drums) started to play together.
They recorded three demo tapes in 1991, Hail you the Beast, Go to Hell & Eyes of Darkness.
The first "official" demo came out in 1992 under the title "I Killed Jesus" and it contains 5 tracks.
In 1994 Peter went to MI in L.A. to study drums and the band was laid on ice.
In the summer of 95 the band started up again under the name Bockfot. The band then
consisted of Daniel J. (guitars, bass & vox) and Mikael Fredriksson (guitars, bass & vox), then in
Mnemonic. The two of them recorded a 2 tracks demo called "Bockfot" with the help of a
drummachine. During that time they asked Erik Gustafson if he could play the bass for them but
unfortunately he had to do his military service in Östersund, and had to turn down their offer.
When Peter D. Came back from L.A. they changed the band name to Maleficio and added
a bassist/singer named Martin Söderqvist. The band was now complete and they started to rehearse.
In the beginning of December 95 they recorded a demo called "Silence" and it contains 6 tracks.
The demo can be described as death metal with heavy metal influences, even some tracks
had real heavy metal vocals sung by Martin S. That sound has become a trademark of Maleficio.
After a while Martin S. quit the band and they found, under alcohol circumstances (as always)
a new singer, who wasnt very good, a girl named Charlotte. They also found a new bassplayer,
Fredrik Ramqvist. In that time they had a violinplayer named Hanna and a fluteplayer named Heiki,
a living legend in the store "Femman" in Gothenburg. With this line-up they only played one single gig
in February 96.
They fired Charlotte and took in Rickard Yxelflod as a singer. They recorded a
demo with 9 tracks in the end of February 96 called "Liar on the cross". Now that demo also
have violin and flute parts in it (over a year later Peter D. mixed on flute and violin to the demo).
With the L.O.T.C line-up they played support act to Skitsystem (A band that has Tompa on vocals from At the Gates & Grotesque) in Gothenburg.
But time went on and Fredrik R. moved to USA to become an artist. Heiki, Hanna & Rickard also quit the band. And after a while Mikael F. moved to Malung to study music. So the only members left
were at that time Daniel J. & Peter D. They managed to record a 6 track demo in June 96
called "The truth". The band took a new direction, it was more death metal than earlier.
This demo was the first release to the public, but only less than 10 copies were given away.
It took them 5 months to get a new bassplayer and sologuitarist. The bassplayer was Erik Gustafson
who was supposed to play with them in 95 and Jimmy Hiltula on sologuitar who also played in the
Black Metal band Archangel. They began to rehearse all old tracks in October 96. Now the
line-up consisted of Daniel Johannesson guitars & vox, Jimmy Hiltula on sologuitar & vox,
Erik Gustafson bass & backing vox and Peter Derenius drums, FX and keyboards.
Maleficio entered the Inapt studio in March 97 to record the demo "Burn", which contains
12 tracks. But due to the fact that the fucking 4 tracks Fostex XR 5 the demo never
came out (some of the recording went untuned, because the tape was going to slow).
The first gig with this line-up, was played outdoors in Lerum.
In May 97 they entered the inapt studio again to record a track called "My morbid fear"
which was made for a music video.
In September 97 Maleficio recorded a demotape called "Winterschlacht 97",
which contains 3 new tunes and one old one. This was the first demo that the band sold.
So far they have given away over 100 demos for free at the pub Down Under in Gothenburg.
The response has been very positive except for the guitarsound.
We hate that demo by ourselves now so therefor we recorded it once again but at that time we were very proud of it because it was only recorded with that fucking 4 tracks Fostex XR 5.
The band refused to release "Winterschlacht 97" to recordcompanies because in March 98 they begun to record a new demotape which is called "Under the black veil" and it contains 6 tracks from their whole
"career" and one new song. This demo was recorded with an 8-track digital Fostex and the sound
is great. This demo has got a very good response and was the top 5 demo of 1998 in Swedens
biggest "metalmagazine" Close-up.
Two tracks from this demo, "The Black Veil" & "Liar on the Cross" are included on a comp. CD named Underjord (Translation "Underground").
Released by ClAdam Englund of Bestialiskt Mangel Zine, a very popular guy in Sweden!
After this Maleficio played two drunken gigs at Down Under (A famous place where groups like Lord Belial, Hammerfall, Sacramentum, Taetre, Meshugga, Entombed and more bands have played)
A new demotape was recorded December 98 and its called "Wings of malice" and it has 4 new tracks
and one old with an even greater sound. Maleficio do not have the typical Gothenburgsound.
This demo becomes the Demo of the month in Close-Up.
The band began to record a new track, "Path to Desecration", in March 99 to the comp. CD "Voices of Death part III" on V.O.D. records, released in 2000, who is owned by Kristian Hasselhun (of Inverted, R.I.P.). On the same time when they recorded the new track "Path to Desecration" they decided to re-record the Winterschlacht 97 demo.
The demo "Malediction Lecture" was recorded in August 2000. In the same time their old guitarist
Mikael Fredriksson joined Maleficio as a solo guitarist. Maleficio now consisted of two solo guitarists
and the sound become more original. The demo "Malediction Lecture" was released with 2 bonus tracks
"Wings of Malice" & "The Black Veil" in late 2000.
In the autumn of 2000 Maleficio played at the "Partille Rocken" with 60 more bands and become the first
Black/Death-metal band to advance to the final in that competition and by that they got two days in a real studio. The track "Army of Forgotten" was recorded live in studio April 2001 and later appeared as a hidden track on the self-financed Album "Army of Forgotten"
Jimmy left Maleficio in November 2000 but joined again in January 2002.
In June 2001 Malefico recorded their 17:th demo (Is that a world record?!!!) and it was released as a full-length album in December 2001. Order it now or die by the light of Christ.
Today Maleficio consists of:
Daniel Johannesson (28) guitars & vox, Jimmy Hiltula (22) sologuitar & vox,
Mikael Fredriksson (25) on sologuitar, Erik Gustafson (26) bass and Peter Derenius (28) drums.
The band listens to bands such as: Bathory, Kreator, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Samael, Kruiz,
Morbid Angel, Emperor, Mercilles, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, W.A.S.P, Sabbat (uk), Mayhem,
Dark Angel, Manowar, Ophthalamia, Nuclear Assault, Dissection, Judas Priest, Nifelheim, Helloween,
At the gates, Destruction, Lycisca, Slayer, Sarcofago, Tiamat, Testament, Venom and more.
Maleficio take gig offers only if they get petrolmoney and two beercrates at the least.
I can remember the first time I saw the band, it was in late 91 in the basement of the Missionchurch in Lerum. They played tunes as "Go to hell" & "Hail you the beast" and after the show the priest came up to them and said: -I heard what you sang about.
He wasnt very glad that the band had played there… hail you the beast dont listen to the priest!

MALEFICIO Army Of Forgotten
5/5
