Artist description
To say that Professor Gas Can is a good would be saying something that isn't true.
While not really a bad band, they are just one more name in an endless list of bands who think they have something important to say just because they owned a Replacements record and didn't quite fit in while in high school. Showing no signs of getting over themselves, they are currently recording with Dave Minehan, whose work with Paul Westerberg hopes to give Professor Gas Can cred-by-association that they couldn't possibly obtain on their own.
Live, Professor Gas Can are about as interesting as the band you saw at that same bar the week before. Their songs are neither memorable nor bothersome, and while they aren't as good looking as the Strokes, they aren't as ugly as the Allman Brothers Band. The bass player has some moves and gets into it a little bit, but the guitar player stands paralyzed with fear that he might drop his guitar or his pick or his hat or his hair or something. The drummer just sits there, which isn't really his fault since he's a drummer and drummers are supposed to sit, unless you're the drummer for the Stray Cats, which he isn't.
It's been said that some people become more attractive after getting to know their personality. This cannot be said of anyone in Professor Gas Can. The rare compliments they receive on their performance are miffed at with rock star exclusionism, all in preparation for that inevitable day when they become real rock star exclusionists. For if Professor Gas Can has any current faults to speak of, it is that they are too nice.
So go see Professor Gas Can, if for no other reason that the only places that will hire them also sell really cheap drinks and attract a clientele that should make it easy for you to hook up if you're feeling lonely. |
