Artist History
geh nackt was conceived January 2000 in Tucson, Arizona when California native Ms M. met Canadian Fosh Lidman. The singer/songwriter and bass player had just moved to Tucson from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, arriving with only his clothes and his bass. He had started a professional job at the beginning of the year, but had no place to live. Seeing a newspaper listing and a flyer on a kiosk about studio lofts, the two ads directed him to the back of the RAW art gallery, at the time leased by a local club favorite James Dead. Feeling the karma, he took the space. Ms M. had moved to Tucson from New York in 1998. She played bass in a few local bands, but was never satisfied. In the fall of 1999 she was inspired to do something different and started by trading in her bass for a guitar. She also began searching for band mates who could feel the inspiration and add to it. At a James Dead show, she asked the bass player and RAW gallery manager Victoria Keller if she knew any uncommitted bass players. The collaboration was natural.
Kraut rock - country - punk is not a genre that people can easily get their heads around, but does describe the flavor of geh nackt. A non-traditional sound, the band exploits the rhythmic percussions of congas, djambas, and other melody makers, such as seed gourds. Additional rhythm is added by an analog synthesizer, the retro instrument resurrected in a few contemporary songs. The lyrics are thought provoking and simultaneously provide humor. Combined the spicy recipe of sounds would make even Martha blush. The fractal patterns of the cover art on their recent EP complement the personality of the music.
The closing of the RAW gallery saw the first geh nackt show. This was followed by a live recording of a jam session called ‘the rebirth of RAW.’ After an escape from the Tucson summer heat, the band started to write new material, as well as rework existing material. Band equipment was supplemented and in June of 2001, recording began. Unfortunately, full-time employment and travel commitments hampered the completion of the recording project and only three songs were completed. The end of the summer saw a show at Casa Frey and Villa Dava de la Rocka, both in Tucson. In preparation for the shows new songs were added to the set list. Recording started fresh in September 2001, resulting in ‘the UNREHEARSED demo’ EP. |
