Artist History
No longer searching for an identity, Second Before the Crash has come a long way since their start of a little over a year ago. Then, they were an unknown trio looking to play shows wherever they could. Now a ferocious foursome, they have a loyal group of fans and a countless number of show dates… The group was a dream of Bret Pusateri, 21. His ad, seeking band members, got the attention of drummer Matt Austin, 18, and bass player Tim Schultz, 18. The going was tough at first. Although they played well together, they were unknown and had to form a sound that would get them recognized. Months were spent in Matt’s basement practicing new rifts and adding lyrics. They finally started to book solid shows, and all of the hard work eventually led to playing shows w/ such bands as Punchline (Fueled by Ramen), The Berlin Project (Orange Peel), A week in July (Orange Peel), Under the Weather (Orange Peel), Agent Felix (Distant Rise), The Goodwill (Negative Progression), Bigwig (Fearless), The Pietasters (Fueled by Ramen), and Showoff (Maverick). The boys were off to an almost alarmingly fast start and were all astounded by the rate of success they were having, and were stuck wondering what was next. Playing at venues in Pittsburgh such as Club Laga, The American Music Caf, and Mr. Smalls Fun House, they were steadily acquiring a loyal fan base. Their catchy but unique writing along with their outgoing personalities won fans over from everywhere. In the fall of 2002, the guys began taking advantage of mp3.com and put 3 songs (Included in kit) up off of their upcoming “Shut up, I’m in a Band” EP. These songs hit hard and racked up close to 10,000 downloads in under a year. Much of this was due to the heavy promotion of their mp3.com site (www.mp3.com/second_before_the_cr) through various outlets. They now average 35-40 hits a day. As previously mentioned, SBC worked for over two months in the summer/fall of 2002 working on their six song EP. The Tracks were laid down at Soundscape Studios just outside of Pittsburgh and were engineer/co-produced by Matt Harrington. (Anti-Flag- Mobilize) The album was mastered in Chicago by Mark Richardson (Prairie Cat Mastering). The band ended up not releasing 3 of the recorded tracks, while releasing the other three on a split CD with friends Almost Cool. The release party for this album went down July 30th at Club Laga. Soon after recording finished for the songs released on the split, a new element was added – Trevor Gwillim, 17 – a lead guitarist. This was an addition that the group knew was needed and when Gwillam was found, their setup was complete. With their line up now set, the band ended the year strong by opening up for A Week In July and The Berlin Project at Club Laga in front of about 600 screaming fans. They began 2003 with a bang by taking fourth place at a Pittsburgh-based Battle of the Bands, missing first by 3 pts. The band acquired a touring rig, which consists of a 1999 Starcraft Van w/a 5 x 8 trailer. The band was then struck with another hill to climb with lead guitar, Trevor Gwillim parting ways with SBC to take on other projects. Bill Gust was then added (Run from India). SBC went on to play the Warped Tour ’03 in Pittsburgh, PA which was “an absolute dream,” says Schultz. With Gust along with the rest of the summer schedule, he has planted firmly in SBC and has brought a unique twist to the band with a great personality and the amazing ability as a song writer.. Along with a drive like none other and songs that are like none other, Second Before the Crash found a label interest out of Chicago that was finally worth pursuing. SBC is currently talking with Capgun Records (capgunrecords.com) and is looking to be in the studio by winter of ’03 working on their sophomore release this time on Capgun Records. In the meantime, Second Before the Crash is on its way to being one of the premier pop-rock bands to emerge from Pittsburgh. SBC’s dedication to what they want to do is amazing along with their inability to be told that “you can’t.” Their fast-paced, high-energy shows are definitely worth catching. Along with phenomenal songs and notable stage presence, the band’s identity has surfaced. Fans, prepare to be rocked! Tim Schultz, Bret Pusateri, Matt Austin, and Bill Gust. |
