Artist History As a kid, Just Jill was told she would never be able to play guitar, which led to her putting her guitar in the closet for many years until 1987 when she came to NYC for a year. In 1987, she bought a Yamaha at Sam Ash and started experimenting with Police music and basically learned bar chords by taping her fingers together because they wouldn't stay put.Who says girls can't play bar chords, she thought to herself.She became self taught through music books and later picked up more chords from various Chicago friends. After a break up, she started going to open mikes and there began the love affair with performance and songwriting. Jill has had several guitar teachers. Her favorites includes, Clay her Jazz guitar teacher who sells guitars at Maxwell Street in Chicago. She also took a few group lessons at The Old Town School of Music. Just Jill studied with Vicky Genfan in NYC to learn a little about open tunings. With VIcki, she wrote material for her first CD "Like a Dream." She is nearly finished with her third album.Jill also studied guitar with Terre Roche, of The Roche Sisters. Just Jill is first and foremost a singer, and she began that in 4th grade, standing up proudly in a grade school auditorium, singing Kumbya. She studied voice in highschool and college, enjoyed classical as well as contemporary music. Her heart was very much set in Alternative/folk. Current favorites are Mary Lou Lord, Patti Rothberg, and of U2 ofcourse. Jill also performed in Suzanne Vega's cd Vigil, which was a collection of songs in response to the WTC. Jill also participates in Jack Hardy's Greenwich Village songwriter exchange.
