Artist History
My passion for the drum kit began at the age of five. Peter Criss of KISS was
my initial inspiration before discovering the BEATLES. Where Criss sparked
my passion for drumming, hearing John, Paul, George and Ringo made me a fan
of song.
METALLICA was still an underground buzz when I became a fan of Lars Ulrich,
their founding member and bombastic drummer. His combination of John
Bonham-like heavy hitting style and odd drum patterns intrigued me and
quickly became a dominant influence. To this day I emulate how Lars accents
with a cymbal crash on odd measures rather than on the beginning of the
measure the way most drummers typically do.
Around that same age, as much as I resisted, I finally gave in to the
progressive Canadians - RUSH. Neil Peart became the most influential of my
drumming style for many years. It was the percussive infrastructure within
Rush's music that I openly understood, not only Peart's amazing skills.
Ear-trained, I learned how his drum patterns built through-out a song just as
the melodic and instrumental content did. This school of thought still
guides me even when contributing my drum part to the simplest pop song.
After years of demonstrating a deliberate Peart influence, I intentionally
simplified my drumming patterns for a more solid feel.
Previously with THE ANDERSON COUNCIL, to emulate an aloof 60’s drumming
style, I revisited some of my Peart and Ringo influences. Ironically, as we
took our show on the road, the comparisons of me and the late Keith Moon of
the WHO began to circulate. When in reality, the complexity and aloofness of
my playing is a Peart/Ringo combo! Eventually I picked up THE WHO's "Live at
Leeds" album, so then came the Moon influence. Yes, folks, I've just
realized Keith Moon's brilliance after 20 years of playing the drums!
Currently, with the band 10 Heads High, I am finnally able to merge
all of my druming influences in to a stlye which compliments
our hard rock/pop songs.
