Press Reviews
After a year of being on the road and a few member changes (bass and drums) Stairwell has offered up a new CD. As usual it came out with the slew of other Takehold releases at the same time (this is becoming a tradition I guess). For those who have never heard stairwell they play a kind of "static prevails" Jimmy Eat World meets straight up rock. And that is what I expected when I popped this CD in and was stopped in my tracks. Literally, I was in my car pulling out of a driveway and I had to stop to make sure I had the right CD in.
The band didn't make a style change what they did was put out an extremely professional, flat out rock record. Now you may say that is what many bands are trying now, but they are actually pulling it off. The production on this record caught me by surprise. It is so clean and clear...it is better if not just as good as a Mark Trombino record.
Now onto the rock. These songs are written so well, great hooks, wonderfully placed strings sections and great use of three guitars. Unfortunately there is only 9 full songs on here and everyone is just so well done. Songs like "box car" I kept playing over and over. The layout on this record is superb, it fits the songs so well. The whole record is so well done that you would have no clue this is on an indi label. If you want to hear a band doing real catchy rock and not just the typical underground rip off the band of the month version pick this record up. Stairwell didn't just try to be just as good as the rock songs and records out today...they set a new precedent and standard for everyone else to rock out up to.
Buy this record before everyone else so you can hear who everyone will want to sound exactly like next year.
