Artist description
Sure it's pop. Is there a problem with that? Pure, unadulterated, melodic pop. With a bit of funk. And some rockier bits. Oh, and some jazz influences thrown in as well. Should be easy enough to pigeonhole. ***** Sideways Glance believes music should be fun to play and fun to listen to as well. Their songs celebrate life, love and ... well, everything. Eggplants, lemmings, flaking paint and that curious old woman down the street. So while there's ample room for melancholy, this is an angst-free zone, okay? ***** This is a collaboration of two extremely different but complementary personalities. Ferg (with the hair) has music in his blood; it's visceral and immediate, almost tangible. Grant (with the knees) is much more analytical; he's fascinated by the mathematics of a song, keen to explore its shapes, lines and curves. It's a creative tension that allows for some great music. ***** Check out their song "Henley Square (This is where I belong)". It's being unhurried on a hot summer evening. It's long walks on the beach. It's ... well, it probably goes a long way to explaining why both Ferg and Grant live in Adelaide, South Australia. There's plenty of other great places in the world but, as the song says, "This is where I belong ..." Download it and find out why. ***** |

Artist History
SIDEWAYS GLANCE--THE BAND ***** Ferg and Grant have been performing together in a variety of contexts for years. But it wasn’t until they saw an ad for a song-writing competition that they actually tried writing together and Sideways Glance was born. They've spent the last two years crafting their own brand of melodic pop “edging toward funk, jazz and rock”. ***** In that time, Sideways Glance has achieved significant recognition despite limited public exposure. In 1997, their song "Henley Square (This is where I belong)" was a co-winner in the South Australia: A Sense of Place competition sponsored by SCALA, ArtsSA and SA Tourism. Their song "Spring Gully Sunrise" received a commendation in the SCALA's 1998 Festival Of Original Music (FOOM) competition. When performing live, Sideways Glance has been an audience favourite at the SCALA FOOM heats in 1997 and 1998—their songs "My Baby (She Don’t Sleep)" and "Hair" were voted #3 and #1 respectively in the audience polls. ***** FERG (vocals, sax, percussion, lyrics, melodic ideas & annoying humming): Ferg grew up in a genuine musical family which often performed as the Ferguson Family Fiasco quartet. He started piano lessons at an early age, quickly switching to clarinet and later picking up the saxophone (“because you can hear it over the band”). His first real taste of the musician’s life, however, came at 17 when he played in a restaurant and was paid in food! ***** He has performed in numerous low-key bands for parties, weddings and corporate gigs over the last 14 years, notably Yurgo Au Go Go, One Loose Moose and Hairless Wombles Without Shoes. ***** Ferg works as a writer when he can convince people to pay him for it. He's married to Andrea and they have three tremendously entertaining children, Elizabeth, Rachel & Samuel (aka "the bananas"). ***** GRANT (guitars, harmonic ideas & legendary knees): Grant has been playing guitars for longer than he cares to remember. He has a degree in Maths and an Associate Diploma in Jazz from Adelaide University. ***** He has worked in numerous bands, including The Calling and Sidewalk Creatures, and is a former member of Adelaide folk/rock group Juniper, having contributed to their first album. He also plays guitars with Andy Hogarth & Moving House. ***** Grant spends his work days doing things to computers that baffle ordinary mortals. He's married to Allison and she claims he won't let her have a dog. ***** SIDEWAYS GLANCE COLLABORATES WITH MARK FERGUSON (Piano, organ, programming and arrangement ideas): another member of the aforementioned musical family, Mark is one of Adelaide’s most talented jazz pianists and recently became the first person to complete Adelaide University’s new Master of Music in Jazz programme. He has played in numerous jazz and pop outfits, ranging from Vo-cool, The Adelaide Connection and The Cats and the Fiddle to the perennial Spank You Very Much. He also played keyboards for the Adelaide season of the musical Cats in 1996. Check out the self-titled debut CD release from Mark Ferguson's Marmalade Trio. Coming soon! ***** Mark has played with international artists Mark Murphy (US) and Scott Tinkler (US) and has supported guitarists Martin Taylor (UK) and Mike Stern (US). He performs regularly with Connaitre Miller, Tubby Justice and many of Adelaide’s top jazz players. ***** SIDEWAYS GLANCE ALSO COLLABORATES WITH--VARIOUS SESSION PLAYERS: Sideways Glance is indebted to Mark’s extensive contacts in the South Australian music community which enabled them to engage some of Adelaide’s most accomplished session players for the South Australia: A Sense of Place recording-—Damien Steel-Scott (bass), Andrew Bignell (kit) and Dave Innocente (guitars because Grant was off galivanting around Tasmania when the recording session came around!). ***** |

Instruments
Ferg uses all natural vocal chords, plays a battered old Walburg alto sax and various shaky, rattly, bangy things occasionally accused of being percussion instruments. Grant plays a beautiful Maton acoustic guitar and a sweet blue Blade electric through a happy little Boogie amp. |
