    Press Reviews
New England Performer - Nov 1998 - KungFu Grip crank out the kind of tight pop gems that bands like the Las, New Order, and the Cure used to do so well: Simple, straight ahead English-flavored rock with as much melodic stock invested in the verse and the bridge as the chorus. And while the brunt of the material on funnybone relies on nothing more than systematic four-on-the-floor drum beats and riff-riddled verse /chorus / verse song forms, KFG establishes themselves as having a knack economical composition without sacrificing any of the hook. Bassist Chuck Membrino comes through with imaginative lines that are completely independent of guitarist Mike Tikka's leads. It's these 'arrangements' that really move the song along. In "You Don't See", Membrino tugs out a healthy portion of hook, pedaling on an arpeggiated riff (that could stand on it's own merit) while Tikka chugs out supportive open-chord passages. The effect is that these lines act more like the left and right hand of a pianist than that of a stock root-in-the-bass rock riff. And succinct, grizzle-free tunes like"This Time" boast punchy production techniques that leave plenty of breathing room for these counterpunctual lines, while never stepping on frontman / guitarist Matthew McGuire's barreling baritone vocal texture. KungFu Grip are one tight Boston band, and if this three song CD is just a preview, look forward to the full release. -Alan Levesque
