Artist description
The world is a wide-open canvas, and Jibe is ready to paint it. Through seven years of prolific songwriting, these four seasoned performers have developed a dynamic and powerful sound that is destined to explode onto the national music scene. They’ve combined driving rhythms, intense and chaotic vocals, unparalleled emotion, and unforgettably energetic live performances to create an infectious brand of rock that transcends the typical “alt rock” genre. Formed in February 1994, Jibe consists of vocalist Joe Grah (Philadelphia), guitarist Toby Bittenbender (Dallas), drummer Ben Jeffries (Tulsa), and bassist Corey Tatro (Fort Worth). With over 500 live performances under their belts, along with three critically acclaimed independent releases (Live At Trees, 1995; Jibe, 1996; In My Head, 2000), the members of the Dallas-based band have devoted their lives to their musical careers. Jibe maintains a steady diet of writing, touring, and recording, and their rigorous touring schedule has taken them across the U.S., from intimate rock clubs to amphitheaters and music festivals. Jibe has shared stages with such acts as The Toadies, Oleander, Our Lady Peace, Creed, The Nixons, Fastball, The Hunger, Bowling For Soup, Deep Blue Something, and Suicidal Tendencies. Their recordings frequent the airwaves of many alternative and rock stations, including KEGL (Dallas), KMYZ (Tulsa), KXUL (Monroe, LA), KBRS (Fayetteville), and KEYJ (Abilene).Jibe’s music is inspired by every moment, every interaction, every consequence, and every orgasm. As the band gears up to record their next album, Jibe continues to captivate audiences with songs that embody diversity and energy. |

JIBE - On the path of self-discovery
By Eric Thompson
Often it becomes easy to take local bands for granted - even when they're doing something completely original and possessing a spontaneous, infectious energy too unquestionably honest to deny. It comes with the territory. Local music fans rarely expect something unusually impulsive and piercingly impassioned to spring up in their own back yard. But that's exactly what Dallas’ Jibe did seven years ago, and they've never stopped to look back since.
Formed in 1994, Jibe’s Joe Grah (vocals), Toby Bittenbender (guitar), Ben Jeffries (drums) and Corey Tatro (bass) came together from four different parts of the country, to create an instinctive and unrestrained alternative, psychedelic powerhouse. Grah left Pennsylvania looking for a change. “Id been a drummer for several years in different bands and came to Dallas looking for something fresh,” he relates. “The poetry Id been working on was like a therapeutic expression, and I wanted to do something really different from what Id been doing.”
Almost immediately after meeting each other, Jibe was formed and began a touring trek that continues today. With well over one thousand shows under their belt, the band has made a name for itself as one of the most dynamic, adrenaline-fueled live acts Dallas has to offer. “We started touring immediately. And I think that's one of the reasons we've been so diverse,” Grah admits. “We haven't sat still in one place or in one frame of mind too long. That kind of life kept us from getting stuck in just one vibe. We learned so much from so many different sources in such a short time. Humanity was our teacher, and constant touring forced us to rely upon a sort of combustible, spontaneous energy we’d developed between us. It was really powerful when it all came together. We got to the point that we were all on the same wavelength.”
For a local band making a living off nothing but music, that kind of touring speaks a lot about the level of commitment the band has maintained all these years. But such dedication - no matter how solid - doesn't keep one from being affected by the kind of craziness that endless touring often attracts.
“I live a fairly crazy life,” Grah confesses. “It’s something you to learn to adapt to. I don’t even have a place to live. I just basically live out of motels. But it all works together to fuel our shows. The stage becomes our place to vent this pent-up energy.” And certainly, the releasing and unleashing of instinctual energy is what a live Jibe experience is all about. The band’s dynamic performances, coupled with Grah’s cryptically alluring energy, comes across as some kind of intuitive, explosive fireball, motioning for the crowd to become lost in the thrill of the moment. Often, Grah seems off in another world, surrendered to reckless abandon, even throwing himself - without warning - blindly into the arms of the audience, and all without ever missing a beat.
Of the band’s music and live energy, Grah relates, “I’d have call it soothing, uplifting, therapeutic, orgasmic, intense. Everything we do is in constant motion, a movement. It’s become a way of life for us. We’re a rock band, of course, but we’re a dynamic rock band. Depending on the particular moment we’re experiencing on stage, we might be very psychedelic, or we might become instantly edgy. We try to make room for anything and everything to happen.”
As the only way to effectively make way for such spontaneity, Jibe has necessarily developed a certain empathic connection and unity between themselves on stage. Which, incidentally, is what the band’s name is all about. “(The name Jibe) describes the act of four separate, unique entities moving together on a parallel path,” Grah explains. “When we make that special connection, we’re jibing together. Although we’re each different, we’re striving to sync-up with one another, to achieve harmony and accord.”
But despite the endless touring and awesome live performances, not to mention last year’s independent release of In My Head, with vigorous alternative rock as good as anything now receiving air play, Jibe has managed to be overlooked by major labels. Why?
Good question. And it’s one that’s been asked by many local and regional journalists and fans as well.
With that said, the question is: does this lack of attention from the majors bother Jibe much? It would seem not. “This is what we do. When the right deal comes along, we’ll know it. We’ve never wanted to pursue the major labels. We’re more in a hurry to find ourselves and maintain our own unique vessel.” |
