Artist History
Playing out of Ottawa, gNw blends effect-driven guitars, intricate drum styles, and haunting melodies to create a dark, yet palatable, musical serum. Grim topics and painfully honest lyrics add to the shroud of melancholy portrayed by a number of tunes. Now, before you reach for the label gun to stencil the word “GOTH” across their foreheads, it should be known that the only interest Grave New World holds for vampires consists of Lee’s (vocals/guitar) interest (wink, wink) in Buffy. People can live the life; GNW just plays the tunes.PLUG ALERT!!! The current release, “Clone Syndicate” is available now on indie music web-site, mp3.com. gNw’s first full length album, recorded in basements and living rooms around Toronto and Ottawa, is due for release in Fall of ‘99. Now for some history :Lee White (vocals/guitar) and John De Lorenzi (drums) met while attending Mc Master University. During a study break (hic! ‘Shcushe me!) they decided it was in their best interest to assemble a musical group. After a few months, they learned that adoration and respect are not common rewards for a cover band, so Lee decided he would try his hand at writing original material. This new project, a three-piece called “Monk Lust”, played around the Toronto circuit for a number of years before disbanding. In search of greener pastures (or less green... who knows?), they moved to Ottawa in Spring of ’98, beginning a search for new blood to rejuvenate the musical body.Meanwhile, half a country away, Aaron Cromwell (guitar/keys/vox) was unsatisfied with coastal life in Nova Scotia. After a two year stint with pop band, “heidelburg Fade...”, he packed his guitar and moved to the nation’s capital. Fresh off the plane, he was kidnapped and coerced (Aaron is still hazy on who the kidnappers were) into learning keyboards for, what the kidnapers kept calling GRAVE NEW WORLD. It turned out to be a satisfactory arrangement for both parties. But wait! GNW isn’t a three-piece, so hold your horses! The final victim was a tall, slender fellow named James Fraser (bass). After a one year joy ride with Ottawa’s “Circuit”, this Ottawa-dweller had a bit of time on his hands. One day on his way to higher education, he was black-jacked and drugged (I think we know who the culprits are on this one...) until he agreed to join Lee, John, and Aaron’s new army. Thus... the birth of GRAVE NEW WORLD!Customarily, an essay’s conclusion touches briefly on its opening statement. Well, this isn’t an essay, it’s a band biography, but that won’t stop me from doing it anyway...the end is inevitable. The end of this bio, that is. But it’s just the beginning for Grave New World. |
