    Press Reviews
The book, "Percepção Musical", of Aderbal Duarte, was everything that I missed in my youth so that I could overcome my limitations in the music field. These limitations did not impede, nevertheless, that something of what I did despite them, would be used on the making of a book evidently born from the desire of making a light expand itself. This way, although I hadn't been suduced by the learning of music mechanisms by a work like these, I can be happy to see my moderate knowledge beeing used on the strategy of seduction which it lauches to interest new musicians. In brief : if I couldn't learn with a book like this, I can help you, still very indirectly, to teach. I thank Aderbal and salute him. I salute also - and above all - the young people that may instruct themselves to music through this book. I myself promise to modestly join them, to try to captivate a little of what would maybe make me, if acquired earlier, a relevant musician that I haven't been. I hope that the success that this publication deserves is big enough to prove what me and Aderbal know (I am sure that he also knows, if not he wouldn't have had the impulse to write a book like these): that the musical soul of Bahia won't content itself on exporting only energy and commercializing. It will strongly expand complexity, deepness and refinement.(Caetano Veloso Musician ). / Just another new book on solfeggio? Aderbal Duarte is, with no doubt, an exeption. Graduated in Composition and Conducting by the Federal University of Bahia, dedicated to the practice and teaching of music said to be popular (or midia, or MPB (Brazilian popular music), or any other wished nickname), didn’t forget, however, the necessity of the pracice/theoric trainning. Attesting this, the fact of publishing now his first book (I hope from a series), result of his work as an educator at the Academia Música Atual and at the Deputado Manoel Novaes Public School. The book, Percepção Musical: Solfeggio Method Based on MPB is basically an exercise book, organized in crescent dificulty levels, containing rythmic and melodic studies on each chapter. Somebody could ask about what’s new, considering the profusion of abridgments and manuals of survived solfeggio and adopted by millions of music schools in our country. The answers to these questions are imediately evidents as we browse, even if entertained, this book. Among theseas the title sugests, the inclusion of some musical jewels from our song-book; the inclusion of exercises of more than one voice, including between the rythmic studies; the use of tipical rythmic standard s from the Brazilian culture on both types of studies; and the inclusion of piano accompaniments, together with guitar fret charts, on each song. This work isn’t a result of speculations of the author, it’s a result of his daily practice in the classroom and of the daily practice of someone who has dedicated most of his time and life to the repertory here approached. In an educational tendency that we share, Aderbal is as a starting point, the most familiar to our music students, and with his merit, organizes the material that he uses in an inteligent and efective way. The music student will find here the basic necessary for his solfeggio study, organized to permit a pleasant knowledgement. The professor will have a material that used to be unaccessible, on a form here presented, making the hard task easier, although invigorating, of transmiting knowledge. Both, I hope, will learn not to forget one of the most important traditions of our music. (Jamary Oliveira, DMA Professor of the Music School of Federal University of Bahia).
