Artist description
Mangataot's debut is sure to be looked back on as a landmark release. Including a pair of sultry vocal tracks featuring Martha Tilston and some slick instrumental numbers. From the label that brought us Bonobo and Quantic, here's another artist who's got what it takes.
(Knowledge Magazine September 2003: Vol. 2 Issue 41)
14 August - All tracks on the current Mangataot EP can be heard via the Groove Distribution website which is at www.groovedis.com
Got some feedback from a certain Mr Bukem concerning said EP promo: "The Mangataot is a lovely piece" he says. Why thank you!
Five new tracks to soothe the soul. A mostly wee-hours-sat-in-the-dark-chilling kind of vibe with the exception of "Vista" which is more of a having-just-woken-up-to-a-nice-cup-of-tea-and-splendid-view-in-rural-India kind of vibe. Two tracks are appearing individually on other Tru Thoughts releases, these being the Mono compilation in association with MTV (April) and the new Shapes compilation (later this year.)
These two tracks feature Martha Tilston on vocals. The combination of her earthy yet floaty vocals and the Mangataot sound is truly enigmatic.
Expect more of this stuff in the future!
Mangataot's "Propolis": a strange blend of Middle-Eastern percussion, rolling timpani and good 'ol funky wa-wa, it's Soufi space-rock funkiness.

THE NAME-
As in 'mange tout' but said with a South African accent. The name was assumed after falling about laughing at a good friend who happened to be from South Africa and happened to be talking about a certain green vegetable. Apparently it's an Afrikaans version of the French name.
THE SOUND-
Mangataot is a purveyor of electronic sounds at the lower end of the BPM spectrum. 'Retronic downtempo funk fuelled, vocal assisted sonic sofa heaven. With tablas.' might be an apt description. Or is it 'tabla funk pyschedelia'? (Breakin' Point Magazine)
Bass guitar, rhodes piano and tablas fuse with diverse influences from dub to jazz to classical indian resulting in a refreshingly original concoction of electronic and acoustic sounds.
Mangataot is Marc Clayton. Originally a bass player, Marc decided to fulfill a dream of learning the classical indian percussion known as tabla in 1999. Having studied in India for five weeks he continued his studies in England and continues to this day. Inspired by a whole new world of rhythmical possibilities he sought to use some of his newly acquired ideas in an electronic context. After spending 18 months evolving the sound in the studio, he finally came to rest at his magic ingredients. But have no fear, the evolution continues. Currently instrumental arrangements outnumber the vocal ones but since Marc teamed up with Martha Tilston, a very talented up and coming vocalist from London, some very exciting new material has been born. Taking a genre previously pioneered by the likes of 'Lamb' and 'Portishead' this unique blend of chilled ingredients makes some very fine listening! Mangataot has a soundtrack quality with asian undertones and a leaning towards beats and breaks which rather than dominate are often balanced by equal helpings of melody and harmony.
Mangataot's first release 'Propolis' appeared on 'When Shapes Join Together 3', a compilation from the much respected brighton label 'Tru Thoughts' released in October 2002. Press release for Propolis: 'This debut release from Brighton based Mangataot blends a fusion of tablas, indian flutes, strings and hip hop beats to make a tune equally suited to ignite the dancefloor as well as soothe the ears...'
