Artist History
Kristen formerly played bass for the St. Louis Park chick-punk group Tampered Posey. Brendan recorded their CD. Joel and Brendan played together for several years in various incarnations of bands. As sophomores, they played in the jazzy Better Than Sex, then played for the indie/noise-rock band Nicely, Nicely, Rusty, Charlie, Benny, Harry Music Rehearsal. Mat drummed for The Drones and played guitar and sang for Mad Hatter, who later on went to play in Radio K’s first annual Battle of the Underage Underground. As seniors in high school, Kristen and Brendan started writing songs and playing shows together, later including Joel. Kristen came up with a band name. Brendan thought it sounded indie. Over spring break we recorded a four-song demo, which we sent to Radio K to be considered for their Battle of the Underage Underground at First Avenue. The demo made the cut, so Brendan asked Mat to drum for the band when he returned from college for summer break. We competed with six other high-school bands from around the Twin Cities at Radio K's battle. It was indie. We won second place, being narrowly beaten by fire-breathing pirates. Seriously. We won a photo-shoot and a press kit, which we probably should have taken advantage of, but didn’t. Whatever. D.I.Y. is indie. In the summer of 2002, we began to record with Mike Sandstedt, who used to play with Mat in Mad Hatter. These basic tracks were the foundation of what would become our self-released self-titled album. Then we all went off to college, playing the occasional show every now and then during breaks. Brendan worked on the album in his free time. In the summer of 2003, we finalized and mixed the tracks. Kristen gathered some of her art for the album cover. We hand-made a bunch of CDs. Then we got lucky. Mark Wheat of Radio K invited us to play live on-air for Radio K’s Off the Record, and a few days later we released our CD at the Dinkytowner. Pretty soon, we're gonna open for Enon at Grinnell College. It'll be hott. And indie. |
