Artist description
In a time when the airwaves are dominated by angst-ridden twenty-somethings and the next big thing on Friday is a laughing remembrance by Monday, its a welcome find to stumble across a band like Voices of Dissent. The band that calls Columbia, SC home is unrelenting in its desire to set themselves apart from the mainstream by taking their music back to what rock music once was- stripped down, guitar driven rock. After hearing the four-piece outfit, its evident that they have every intention of delivering nothing less than finely crafted music.
The history of V.O.D. can be traced back a few years back to a local band called 16 Penny. Singer/guitarist Ernie Franks (Midnight Society) and guitarist Joseph Duncan (Euthanasia) were playing in the band together and decided to start collaborating together on their musical ideas. The two immediately found a songwriting chemistry and played several acoustic gigs around town before linking up with bass player Dan Everett. After working with a few different drummers, the three have woven a tight knit sound that is reflective of their musical tastes.
The sound of Voices of Dissent is clearly derived from classic blues-influenced rock and roll. Franks recalls listening to Jimi Hendrix as a child and spending hours in his room learning the riffs. It must have been in these formative hours that he became one of the most well rounded guitarists to hail from Columbia. When the band plays live, Franks easily accessible voice billows over the sounds of his Stratocaster while Duncan fills in the gaps with the nuances that set a good band apart from a band that is destined to leave its’ mark musically.
