Artist History
"How the heck do you do that?"
Well, it depends on the piece. Each one requires a different approach to
make the notes work while retaining the personalities of the animals.
The preparation for each piece is usually far more time consuming than the
performance itself. In most cases I make my own "Soundfonts" for use
with the Creative Labs Sound Blaster series of computer sound cards.
When the soundfonts are made, digitally sampled recordings of actual animal
sounds are tuned, assigned note values and given ADSL (Attack, Delay, Sustain, Release)
values and that's it. In most cases I do no filtering of any kind to the original sounds.
Once that's done, all I have to do is play the notes from a keyboard using various MIDI
sequencing programs...however, given the nature of many animal forms of expression,
traditional phrasing immediately flies right out the window.
Disclaimer: No animals were harmed in the creation of these pieces, but some humans
may have been slightly damaged. |
