Artist History
Jay Money began his journey into the hip hop culture
while in the sixth grade. After he discovered that
he was no good at b-boying(break dancing), he began
trying his hand at emceeing, during the summer of
1983. Three years later (1986), while attending Central
High School, Jay was introduced to DJ Suicide, who
had the hottest mixtapes at that time. After hearing
Jay's lyrics, Suicide immediately put him down with
his crew, "Forever Fresh." Jay began making demos
and was introduced to the Omaha scene on Suicide's
mixtapes. Over the next few years, Jay would get
into and win, many battles, earning the title "Heavyweight."
In the spring of 1992, Jay became a founding member
of Da Basement Society, a crew of elite emcees, conceived
by Jay's long time friend, and emcee, DBX. The crew
consisted of DBX, Jay Money, N-Tellect, Kee Lo Z, and
All Ayz, who joined the crew a few weeks after it formed.
They made themselves known in the North Omaha streets
very quickly, challenging any crew that wanted to
battle. They also became known for their live performances
at local shows. Towards the end of '92, Suicide entered
into a business venture with Craig "Thumper" Samuels
(former bass player for The Royal Court Band) to launch
Thumpin' Hard Records. In '93, they released "Parental
Advisory ' A compilation of local rap artist, featuring
Jay on the solo tip and with The Basement Society.
Due to creative differences in business, Suicide
left Thumpin' Hard, taking Jay and other artists
with him, to form Crossphade Productions. During
the summer of '93, Jay Money, along with two other
local artist (K-Mack and Sanman), opened a concert
at the Civic Auditorium Arena, featuring E-40 and
The Click, Spice-1, DJ Quik and Second 2 None. In
the winter of '93-94', Da Basement Society went on
to open two concerts in Lincoln, Nebraska (Capital
City): the first one featured A Tribe Called Quest,
De La Soul and Souls of Mischief, the second featured
Boss and Onyx (which was actually in February of '94).
In April of '94, they debuted their EP release, "Who
Downstairs?" which almost landed them a deal with
Ichiban Records. Once again, business went bad, money
wise, so Jay Money saw turning to the hustlin' game
as a means to acquire the money to keep things moving.
Between the period of 1994 to 1996, Da Basement recorded
new material which was never released, and Jay's activities
got him a prison sentence of 4 to 6 yrs. with the Nebraska
Department of Corrections (Dec. 1996). In 1997,
Crossphade Production became Crossphade Muzic label,
and released the first CD project, a compilation called
"Behind Enemy Lines," which featured two remixes of
previously recorded songs by Jay Money. One of those
songs, "Writerz Block" received rotation in Norway and
debuted on their charts at #9. That next year,
Crossphade released their second project, "681", also
a compilation, bringing the collective of artists
on the label together as the "Crossphade Family."
Jay Money was able to record new material for this
project, due to the fact that he was on a work release
program. Jay was featured on two solo joints ("Show
Ya Skillz, 100 A Head"), a group cut representing
his click, Rusty Knuckle Organization ("Ashy Palms"),
and the albums title cut. On December 21, 1998, Jay
Money was released from incarceration to take part in
Crossphade's live performances which were with local
alternative bands. The first 3 performances proved
to be successful, bringing in a mixed crowd of alternative
music and rap music fans. Unfortunately, due to inner-conflicts
at the label, Jay Money (and other members of RKO)
left Crossphade in August of '99. After a two-year
hiatus, Jay is back on the Crossphade label as a solo
artist. His solo LP, "Da Main Event" is just about finished
and should be released in the early summer of 2002.
Jay is also working on a project with Basement Society
member, N-tellect, calling themselves "Cella Core,"
and a Basement Society Album is in the works. As of
now, you can download the single "Midwest Live," and
the hot club remix of "Midwest Live."
