    Artist History
Bio: Alex Hearst b Alexander Terhorst 15 September 1966 (?) Melbourne, Australia. The eldest of four children to Paul Terhorst (agricultural equipment travelling salesman, Dutch immigrant arriving in Australia 1949) and Judy Joyce (jazz pianist, singer and revue dancer), he grew up exposed to a wide range of music – Elvis, Johnny Cash and Germanic Classical (from his father) and Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Dusty Springfield (from his mother). Played a number of instruments as a child (inc. sax, harmonica and piano) before settling for the guitar (for its versatility and freedom of movement when singing/ performing). Aged 9, he made his first performance at a Sunday school picnic (St. Lucretia D’Avenel) singing and playing ‘Love Me Tender’ and Leadbelly’s ‘In The Pines.’ While his mother convalesced from a long illness, Alex travelled extensively with his father throughout the southern country side, performing at rodeos, agricultural shows and field days. Dissuaded from entering show biz by parents, he went to college (Business) but soon drifted back into music, playing as a session guitarist in rock bands and performing his own songs at coffee shops and folk clubs. At 21, Alex toured through SE Asia and Japan, making a good living as a performer (which he does to this day). Continually restless, he feels he needs to do many other things (beside his professional music career). Has appeared in many stage productions and (art house) movies as well as writing several novels and numerous short stories (under a well known nom-de-plume). Alex has also received several Cultural Development awards and has been praised for his voluntary work with intellectually disabled adults. As a professional performer/ musician, Hearst is an indefatigable live performer but it is his original compositions that are most highly valued. Drawing on his blues, jazz and country roots, he expresses lyrically the elegant starkness of human yearnings, stripped of dross and pretence. He prefers the earthiness of real instruments but readily uses technology to enhance and assist the finished article. Although his original compositions are often acclaimed as pop-art/ commercially accessible, Hearst repeatedly turns down lucrative contracts, preferring his independence (and the freedom and simplicity that goes with it). A powerful artistic force, Hearst says (without a trace of regret) ‘I am, and will endeavour to remain, my own man, always.’ His latest album, ‘I Gotta Keep Movin’ a boutique label release (available only by mail order and via mp3.com) exhibits Alex Hearst at his finest – elegant, relevant and restless.
