Artist History
SANCHO traces its roots back to the sound of an 8-year-old Gypsy kid
playing flamenco on a streetcorner late one night in Sevilla, Spain.
That's what inspired SANCHO founder, songwriter and guitarist David
Ballard to start thinking about mixing his favorite music in the whole
wide world -- melodic rock & roll -- with the spirit of the Latin
world. While attending college at the University of Barcelona, the
California-born gringo came to realize
that any culture that allowed little kids to play guitar late into the
night (or serve drinks in their father's bar) was inherently more rock &
roll than pretty much any band he'd ever seen. ____________
So David returned home with a dream to write songs that were hard, fast
and sexy, yet brimming with the fatalistic romanticism of the Old
World. It took him a long time to perfect his style, but luckily he was
a prolific songwriter and eventually managed to create a style that
became NOT "rock en espaņol" but rather "rock & roll in Spanglish."______________
The key to honing this style was a move to Los Angeles, which these days
is about as Latino as you can get without crossing the border into
Mexico. David was lucky to find kindred spirits like bass player Rick
Harrison, another gringo who embraced the Latino culture and its intense
lust for life. And even though she was raised in India, singer Avtar Khalsa brings an exotic
touch to the vocals that enhances the sensuous nature of the Spanglish
lyrics._______________
SANCHO must be doing something right -- in a little over a year, they've
produced an album entitled "Ana" that got airplay for months on the late
great Silverlake station Pirate Cat Radio, and a video that went into
regular rotation on Spanish language TV station KJLA's Rok-A-Mole show.
Their constant gigging at clubs around town has earned them a loyal fan
base known as the SANCHO ARMY, and they have also recently signed a
publishing deal with newly formed music licensing company Antic Inc.

Press Reviews
"...this is honestly a great debut...played by a group of talented musicians, with a sustained intensity of emotional energy through the length of the entire CD. Indeed, everything from the chord progressions to the singer's powerful but well-honed voice give another boost to the ever-rising genre of Spanish rock." - NoHoLA 6/20/02 |
