Artist description
Describing her compositions as "intensely personal", Rain Worthington loves
to write music. Primarily self-taught, Ms. Worthington has also been
influenced by Near-Eastern tonalities, having traveled and lived in Greece,
Egypt and Turkey. These qualities, together with the sounds and rhythms of
the city environment, exert a strong presence in her compositions.
Ms. Worthington's early works have been heard at such downtown Manhattan
spaces as The Kitchen, the Ear Inn and at musicales produced by composer
Charlemagne Palestine. She directed two new music ensembles, Zone and
Hizohi, which performed at Roulette, Danceteria, Tin Pan Alley, CBGB's, 8BC,
and PS122. Recent compositions focus on both chamber and full orchestral
works. She has had premieres with the Sirius String Quartet, Synchronia, Row
Twelve and been featured in contemporary music festivals at James Madison
University, Bowdoin College and the American Composers Forum-NY. A new
orchestral work was premiered by the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble
conducted by Petr Kotik.
While committed to the challenge of writing serious music, Ms. Worthington
has also been very involved in educational outreach. As an Orff-Schulwerk
teacher, she taught music in New York City elementary public schools for over
a decade. She has been awarded grants from Meet The Composer, ASCAPLU$, the
American Music Center and the American Composers Forum.
