Press Reviews
this article appeared in the Feb 1998 issue of the Schoolcraft Connection. Ugliboy out to pretty start. Local band releases “Jesus RocketShip" in popular stores Rarely does a local have the courage and raw talent to step off the local band scene and get a foot in the door of popular music. The local sensation Ugliboy’s “Jesus RocketShip” may prove to be its ticket into the pop scene. Proof its climb to popularity is the big names preparing to carry “Jesus Rocketship,” which was released on Jan. 1st. “Jesus Rocketship” is contracted to hit such stores as Best Buy, Harmony House and Sam Goody. The entire record is somewhat laid back, with a heavy alternative feeling. One major element that sticks out about this band is how the lead singer carries the band instead of the other way around. On the average, local bands lack the lead singer quality that can push them over the top, but Ugliboy holds back the singer. Though the quality of the tape was a bit grainy, it is clear that the band’s dark, melodic flavor is definitely hot. Perhaps a prime example of this dark felling would be in “Lonely boy,” the last track on the first side of the tape. Although the band has great dark tone, its diversity shines as it plays lighter tunes such as “TLC” Ugliboy is made up of lead singer and guitarist Dennis Parker (Dennis Baker),Mark Witbeck and Mark Hubbard on bass, Don Hopper on drums, and Tim Patalan (Producer of Sponge) on string arrangements. As a results of Parker’s involvement at SC, the band’s touring career was put on hold, but since the end of fall semester, it has been on the road again. With the band’s newest CD being released in big name stores, Ugliboy’s career is definitely shooting upwards.”Jesus Rocket Ship” is something that is worth the attention of both die hard local band lovers, and popular music worshipers. Don’t be surprised if you see this band’ dark flavor spring up at CD retailers everywhere. by Kirk Lee Staff Writer
"...If you like dark, melodic tones that's not too heavy, ugliBOY is your band."...HM mag
"...I realy like the sound of this band!"
Marty McCall, First Call
"...Why didn't you guy's stick around to sign autographs after the show?"...Tony Weatherly, Sonlightmusic Company
"Ugliboy hold their growling guitars on a short leash, keeping the riffs choppy and focused. The bass never climbs out of low idle, while vocals range from a near falsetto to a low, full-bodied baritone."Kali H. Listen.com
