Artist History
McCarthy's musical career began at the age of 7, when an opportune rendition of a TV jingle on his grandfather's piano was enough for his father to send him piano and guitar lessons. Following some shining classical achievements, 1st place songwriting competitions and a few early band demos, it was off to college to study a Music Diploma....this later being dropped in favour of gigs and local fan/press interest with Haze, a Colchester band formed with fellow college musicians. Interest from Island Records, who watched them at The Pop Club (Kentish Town, London) and Essex University (Colchester) was not enough to stop the band splitting up through personal differences, quitting their Colchester pad and a not insubstantial local following. Over the next few years there were some promising meetings/collaborations with producers, songwriters and labels; including a production deal; writing/session work; and a soundtrack performance / appearance in the film "Fast Food", in which McCarthy played a punk singing the Clash epic "Should I Stay or Should I Go". No record deals though, and McCarthy bought a 1-way ticket to Bangkok in February 2000. A 5 month trip around S/E Asia provided excellent inspiration; and the year that followed travelling around Australia was to end in a production deal in Perth, with award winning Producer Ben Glatzer. McCarthy and Ben formed a good working relationship and produced Libertine and Russian Roulette, following which McCarthy returned to Sydney for mastering with one of Ben's colleagues, Australian mastering guru Don Bartley. A record deal was offered by Shanachie Records (Sydney), and there were many offers to see the live act by such major Labels as EMI. But, no live act being in the same hemisphere, and his travelling Visa having expired, McCarthy returned to the UK. McCarthy is currently working on new material. His website - www.mccarthythill.com, is due to be completed and launched soon with new songs, photography and artwork. McCarthy recently won 1st Prize (Rock category) in the USA Songwriting Competition, and there has also been interest from London producers, Independent and International Record Labels. |
