Artist History Some people are determined and driven-never settling for just "getting by." Mark Smeby has never wanted to do something just for the sake of doing it. Always ready for the next challenge and looking for ways to bring about change in his life, he has continually put the present behind him and pressed on to the future. "The changes that have occurred in my life, some accidental, some 'self-inflicted,' have taught me to always look beyond what is directly in front of me, and to see the truth behind it. The same is true for how I look at people. People waste too many valuable relationships by judging people on what they see on the outside. God would like us to look at other people like He sees us-forgiven." With almost twenty years experience behind him as a professional singer and actor, Mark brings a maturity and wisdom to his performances that compliment his often introspective, and at times, light-hearted look at life. He combines his honest and worshipful ballads with upbeat pop tunes, interspersing his creative and unique outlook into monologues that will have you laughing one minute, and reflecting the next." Growing up in the church has taught me a lot of valuable lessons. It has also taught me a lot of things about people, and how easy it is for us to get caught up in trite words and simplistic ways of looking at things, so that we tend to not think very much when it comes to issues of sincerity and what it means to be truly open to God and other people." His goal in life is to be a man driven by God. He desires to be a man of conviction and integrity. While he doesn't claim to have it all figured out, he feels that there is great value in sharing his journey towards God, and how he is growing in understanding of how God views him. "I'm constantly being reminded of what a sinner I am, all the while, I'm trying to understand God's grace and how much He loves me. He doesn't see me as a worthless loser. He looks at me and sees His Son. That is pretty incomprehensible. I write songs and stories that I need to hear-songs that remind me of these truths." Mark views his role as an artist similar to the Olympic runner Eric Liddle in the movie Chariots of Fire, "I don't feel that I am in anyway better, or more capable of doing what I do, than anyone else. But I feel that for me not to express myself through my music or acting would be to deny a part of me that can bring glory to God and possibly bring about change in other people's lives."
