Artist History
A band is a subculture... people with similar likes and dislikes and a mutual respect and love of the music they play. Break Nek formed in November of 2000 with no direction other than the need for an aggressive metal sound. By the time the group's line-up had solidified, the sound of the band had been established. Mixing power with speed, the band developed a thrash style reminiscent of early 80's thrash, but with updated sounds and sensibilities pushing them to the forefront of the new millenium. With the addition of Joel Gentry as lead vocalist in June of 2001, it was just a matter of time before the band gained the recognition of their peers and of their fans. The group changed their drummer in early summer of 2002 after opening for Prong. They found a new drummer, James, and started playing again in July. |

Battle of the Bands: Bring it on
BAND: Break Nek
MEMBERS: Corey Shea (guitar), Bill Yurgaitis (guitar), Heath McGowan (drums), Scott McCarty (bass), Joel Gentry (vocals)
SOUNDS LIKE: Bludgeoning thrash; reference points include Sepultura and Pantera at their most aggressive
WHAT ELSE? Break Nek Quickly jumped to the forefront of West Michigan's heavy music scene after its first-round Heavyweight Championship victory - not bad for a band that's only been together since November 2000. If the group's live set is as aggressive as its four-song demo ("Blessed With Hate": great song), they just might steal an underdog victory. |
