Artist History
tenDOLLARTHOMSON was formed in the mid-nineties.
Three high-school friends, Ben (rhythm guitar), Steve
(bass), and Blake (vocals), decided to take their jazz
trio in a different direction. Through the
intervention of a supportive father, the trio was
introduced to Scott (lead guitar), an experienced
musician whose experience did not bias him against
working with younger musicians. In fact, Scott leaped
at the prospect of working with such a talented trio.
But for a drummer, the band had reshaped itself and
was already looking to the future. Several drummers
were auditioned, though none met the band’s desired
standard. Then, upon hearing rumours of a
precociously talented teenager – in fact a student at
the band’s old high school – they made a few calls,
and invited Nick, now 14, to audition. After the
first song, the decision to accept Nick was unanimous,
and tenDOLLARTHOMSON was formed.
As the band developed, Blake, the main songwriter’s
approach to writing also developed: “For a lot of
bands, music is a way to get a message across, but for
me it is more of a feeling or a state of mind I am
trying to convey. Openness to interpretation is
essential, instead of the work being literal.” The
desire to move people emotionally fuels the intensity
of tenDOLLARTHOMSON’s live shows, as does a strong
awareness of the audience’s desire to hear good music
and experience a vibrant performance.
However, one shouldn’t get the impression that
tenDOLLARTHOMSON emerged fully formed. The band has
suffered its share of woes: low gig attendance,
drunken disruptions, equipment failures, and shoddy
sound. But the band has taken these setbacks in
stride – and to their credit, has learned from them.
“We want to move people, to impact them. This has
become our number one priority.” Determined and
ambitious, tenDOLLARTHOMSON has recorded a full length
album and achieved regular airplay. |
