    Artist History
Pillow Talk were formed a couple of years ago to provide jazzy accompaniments to beat poets in York, playing for people such as Adrian Spendlowe. The band expanded their set to include an ever-increasing variety of songs with unusually absurd lyrics in a variety of styles, becoming well-liked members of a growing York music scene in 2000/2001. Since then the band has enjoyed some good times.... Winning York University's Battle of the Band 2001. Recording the album 'Purely Platonic ' and selling out the first batch in 2 days. Playing an average of 2 gigs a week throughout much of spring 2001 at venues such as York Fibbers, York Uni, Nottingham Uni, Manchester Pitcher & Piano, Luton Greenbank, Elvington Air Museum (supporting Ash and The Lightning Seeds) and Ripon & York St. John College. The band wrote an EP entitled 'Painful Love' which is due for recording in the near future and features classic sing-along tune 'Teach The Kids To Love' and guitar driven 1920s music hall funkathon 'Painful Love' They played several gigs with the full 6-piece line up of James Tall/Harmless (guitar/vox), Daniel Cheeseboard (Keys/vox), Gideon Retch (drums/vox), Jonathan Heart-2-Harte (Bass/vox), Bernard Beard (aggressive bass) and 7 foot tall Christian Smooth (percussion). The band recruited stand-in drummer/percussionist Rodney Plotter and medical veteran Dr Roland Parker on bass and vox late in 2001 to provide support for stretched gigging timetables. The 'Talk were featured in York's :Here magazine who rated them in their 'Mint or Unmint?' column as decidedly 'Mint'. The 'Talk have a knack of making any audience enjoy themselves, having won over crowds ranging from 'Sit Down And Stare' music studio showcases to raucous pub-club environments and outdoor student festivals. An engaging band with a musically confident, individual style, Pillow Talk are beginning to take gigs outside of York, in Nottingham and further south, playing as a 4-piece.

"Recorded using their winnings from York University Battle of the Bands, "Purely Platonic" shows Pillow Talk in all their piss taking glory. These boys don't seem to be able to take anything seriously, least of all themselves. Imagine Derek and Clive with fantastic cabaret cheese-band capabilities and you're getting close. A wurlitzer organ bastardisation of Star Wars, a song about a Ford Escort, and the Eastenders theme tune sit alongside Weird-Al-Yankovic versions of Sweet Dreams (seemingly the East European Jazz-Lounge Swing Remix), Come as You Are, and a superbly irreverent live recording of the inventively titled "Blind Date". This is not an album that you'd put on to impress your mates with your impeccable musical tastes. It IS however, a VERY funny listen, and instantly puts a smile on your face. Pillow Talk are a bunch of rather talented musicians who take an extremely different approach to making music. They recently rocked York University's "Access All Areas" event, and sold out of the CDs they had on sale within five minutes of finishing their set. Worth every penny of the £4 price tag, and available from their website: www.pillowtalkweb.co.uk."
