Interview in the January 2002 edition of Terrorizer
Thus far, Hampshire's best-known extreme metal band is the unholier-than-thou Reign of Erebus. Two-thirds of Slaughter Of Souls did their time with the "humanracists", until their beer-fuelled bonhomie and sense of humor demanded they find alternative employment. "It was alright being in Erebus, it was quite cool being in a band that had something to say, but it was a bit restrictive" says Guitarist Pete. "The last gig I played I was told to not look at the audience before or after going on stage, and don't smile. That's not really me. I just thought 'Fuck it'. I was a bit gutted with the whole scene.
From there, drummer Stu and bassist Mike, both ex-Erebus, and guitarist Julian formed the band as a refreshing change. "We decided we'd form a band where we could use the words 'Whoa yeah baby baby!" Pete laughs. "I mean I started playing guitar so I could get blow-jobs of blondes....."
"And I started playing the drums because I couldn't play guitar!" quips Stu. "I left Erebus because I think there's more to brutality than blastbeating. Take Bolt Thrower. Heavy as fuck, chugging double bass. You don't have to do warp factor 10 all the time." Pete picks up the point: "To my mind one of the heaviest songs ever written was Overkill's 'Skullcrusher'."
"Oh yeah baby yeah!" exclaims Stu. "We're so fuckin old school its scary!" chuckles Julian. As the band grew, it developed into a Basingstoke-via-Stockholm combination of classic Brit-metal and heavily Swedish-inspired death-thrash. Pete: "That was accidental really. We've always been into Entombed, Hypocrisy, In flames, At the Gates....." Was it ever felt that Slaughter Of Souls as a name was a bit....obvious? "Well, I always wanted to call the band Dave. Julian preferred Bob...."
"I'd like to point out that I was not involved in the naming of the band...."Stu insists, Deadpan. But do you miss that driving philosophy that you liked about Erebus, or do Slaughter Of Souls have something to say too? As one the band shout back "Drink Beer, Worship Satan!" raising their pint glasses in toast. "We've got something to say in the fact that we haven't got anything to say..."offers Julian, then carries on drinking. "Heavy metal for us is really about drinking beer, headbanging like fuck, having a good laugh," Pete continues. "We write songs about Satan and killing but...when Motley Crue wrote'Smokin in the boys room' they weren't really still smoking in boys rooms!"
With one demo 'Nexus Avernus' under their belts, SOS have literally just completed a brand spanking new demo, 'Cold Slab Cleansing'. "The first Demo was just getting it out of our system," explains Pete. "This time it's a more cohesive, we're developing our own sound."
"We do whatever comes neutrally." Stu adds. "If it comes out like an Entombedesque groove, so be it! If it's got a bit of Dissection, then woo-hoo!" Julian sums up: "we're more focussed now, we really know where we are coming from. Now we're ready to go."
The following 2 reviews are from Terrorizer November 2001 edition.
Review for first demo "Nexus Avernus" Despite getting off to a dodgy start with a rather weak production, it's clear from this four tracker that Slaughter Of Souls do have something. Operating mainly in the mid-paced thrash/death territory, they manage to inject a little bit of the unexpected via some unusual riffs and a characterful vocal performance. Not the tightest band yet, but for now they can content themselves with the knowledge that they've got more than an average slice of originality.(7)

Review of gig at- The Railway Inn, Winchester Hailing from Basingstoke (just outside Stockholm), Slaughter Of Souls put many a fist in the air with their well-paced and likable brand of gnarled death metal Swedophilia, mixing honest, headbanging energy and subtle melody with the odd gust of icy black metal. Such is the 'select' turn out tonight, one of the bands two guitarist/vocalists sings the galloping "Club Dead" in the style of Dave Mustaine, specially for a mulleted fan in the audience named carlos. It's a nice touch, from a band who are welcome break from the po-faced anal retentiveness of so many other (How many are there exactly? - D)Hampshire-based extreme metal bands. |
