Artist description Mango Son is a seven-piece band from Seattle devoted to one goal: making you dance. For us, this means playing the creole music of Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic -- son, fulia, plena, merengue -- percussion-heavy music that cuts through the formalities to get your feet moving. Our approach to traditional music starts with a strong rhythm base of congas, timbales or trap set, maracas or g?ira, sometimes wondering into Brazilian beats. Upright bass, Puerto Rican cuatro and Venezuelan cuatro fill in the gaps . Unlike other Latin bands, we are not heavy with brass, relying on only one trumpet or flugelhorn for fills and solos. Finally, we stick with simple vocal lines and harmonies. The result is a clean, lively sound that is accessible and true to the roots, even though we never play a song in the traditional way. . .
