Artist History By the end of the year 1999, in a university classroom in Santiago, Chile; two graphic design companions that didn't really know eachother talked about music. One of them was carrying a cassette with songs of his own that he had recorded in his house only with a guitar. This last one, Yan, had been in a couple of bands before but mainly playing cover songs or just singing in pubs. Yan -born in Vancouver, Canada- started to fool around with his brother's guitar by the age of twelve, and by then started writing songs, basically inspired by U2 and The Police. At the age of 15 he moved to Chile. By 1999, he had composed around eighty songs, of which about fourteen of them were in this cassette that he ended up lending to this companion called Ricardo Villavicencio. Ricardo had been in six bands. He started out with school mates in a band they named Dulls, inside which was Renato Pizarro playing the guitar. After each getting into separate universities, Ricardo and Renato stopped playing together but they maintained a nearby friendship. During the following years, "Richy" and Renato continued playing with other bands of their own. Renato started out his own band named Ranga, which still remains his other important band. After meeting Yan, Ricardo carried around the tape and listened to it repeatedly in his car and at home, surprised by it's musical quality. Right away he got in touch with Yan to start up a new project. They started to rehearse weekly the songs, while they sought the other missing members. Through a friend they met Gonzalo Troncoso, bluesman, architecture student and practically born a musician; with knowledge of guitar, bass and keyboards. He joined the band that from a beginning would be named Beerfly. After a few small gigs, the trio -at this point- was firmly formed. But it lacked a lead guitar. Renato -Sound Engineering student- had attended a pair of rehearsals with the intention of maybe joining the band, but his commitment to his other projects impeded it. With a temporary guitarist they went to Yan's house on the beach -with all the instruments, equipment, a fourtrack and Renato as engineer- to record a demo tape of twelve songs, which was recorded in three well used days. When they return to Santiago they make sure to start moving around their material, and get to show the demo to an independent record label. The producer, interested in the material, offers them a record deal. After a couple of guitarists in the position, destiny makes Renato finally be part of the band and complete the quartet Beerfly. Their first album -still not released due to disagreements with the record label- named "Serotonina" is the first sample of the mixtures and influences shared among this new band. With melodic songs -that mix romanticism with some more edgy sounds- these four boys offer us a type of music that has always been around but that simply has been left aside for more plastic and disposable music. If there is a musical message in Beerfly, this would have to be that roots should never be forgotten.
