Artist description
Chip Greene, a single, after-school mentor, writes songs with the kind of urgent confidence you've come to expect from someone half his age, with twice his life experience. Sometimes cocksure, often vulnerable, Greene's songs are familiar in the way honesty always is, and unique in their interpretation of the melting pot of artists who have influenced him. Cutting his teeth on such iconic staples as The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen, Greene also draws on both the garage rock of Ryan Adams and the desperate, gorgeous melancholy of Aimee Mann. By comparison, he suffers from an embarrassment of riches. Said to echo the likes of Marc Cohn, U2, and Billy Joel, Greene's emotionally voyeuristic and compact lyrics are both satisfying and disquieting.
Having spent a year during high school in front of the piano, recovering from a motorcycle accident, Greene's graceful ease with the instrument is the touchstone of his work. He is, foremost, a musician, and his often socially informed lyrics are an afterthought to his relationship with the chords themselves.
He has worked at the landmark Bluebird Cafe for the past six years, and has been privileged to open for such artists as Drivin' and Cryin', Hootie and the Blowfish, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, and Chubby Checker. He is currently recording a full-length album with producer Shane Koss. |
