Artist History
As writer, and sole instrumentalist of Ask Nora, Jeffrey Mettlewsky's vision is to maintain a steady course of writing music based around musicianship and experimentalism. Learning to play piano and read music at age six after his sister, Nora, he started his roots very early at his home in suburban Vancouver, B.C. Often relying on his ear to distinguish melodies, developing movement into composition started early at age 12. Advancing into stringed instruments at age 15, guitar and bass came noticeably easy, having experienced the rudiments of music through his beginnings on piano. His first songs with words came at this time, having the option to compose songs on either piano or guitar.
Playing and constantly practicing in his home, Jeffrey began to be involved with bands at his church and playing with friends in school. Co-writing songs for a band called the Stepping Stones in his teens, he experienced the tribulations of being in a band with multiple writers, and left the band at age 17.
Now writing songs exclusively on his own, he began to experiment with more instruments. This time it was mandolin, harmonica and percussion, and he soon put down his ideas on to tape using a home 8-track. Learning of a Canadian song competition called Write On, he submitted one of these recordings, "Letting Go," and won a scholarship and web site exposure. This song also appeared on a local bands compilation, "So You've Ripped Your Pants," 1999, independent. At this time he had written close to a dozen songs and now was able to see the strengths and weaknesses of his songwriting. After omitting some of his most early Stepping Stones' songs he came to organize a track listing for his first CD, Fields Of Light. Copies were mostly distributed amongst friends and support was given to make a music career.
Remaining solo, and playing all the instruments except drums, he began work on his second recording of songs, this time with more professional expectations. Working with engineer, Kurt Wilkinson, and drummer, Steve Watts, he created Circling As Warmth on his own independent label, Viridian Records, and released it at 20 years old in the year 2001 to the public. His songs became eclectic, working in many styles like folk, psychedelic rock, blues, and even some funk. All songs flowed in similar artistic notions, bringing repeated listens just as entertaining as the first. With a large palette of sound colours used, and with the help of his growing keyboard collection, Jeffrey created what not even some bands could achieve in the studio. "Are You Wormwood?" his first single off the album was released to all campus and co-op radio stations in Canada. This song was even discovered on this mp3.com site by talent scouts Kid Antrim Music for their unsigned compilation disc to be releaed in 2002 to supporting radio and major record labels in the US.
In May 2002, Ask Nora was chosen amoung hundreds of local recording acts to showcase in the singer/songwriter category at Vancouver's foremost new music festival, New Music West. Whether it's by staying solo, or by forming a band to perform his songs, the depth and characteristics of his songwriting will remain constant and thoroughly individual. It's the sort of thing that makes for a fine reputation- and that's something that Ask Nora strongly aspires towards.

Press Reviews
"...An invitation into the head of Jeffrey Mettlewsky." -Mr. Bif, Bif's Radio Show
"Using his guitar and vocals as the focus of the songs, he adds other instruments to the songs to give the songs color. His singing is strong, and he often goes from a whisper to a growl to a falsetto over the course of one song." -Nick Doyle, Left Off the Dial
"Rockin' folk tunes teased with some experimental charm." -ER, CD Baby Distribution
