Artist description
Merge Dualities: natural, textural nuance with the tight precision of technology; programmed trance inducing rhythms against never-play-the-same-thing-once improvisation; experimental creation within the lineage of musics of the worlds people... "When I see a piece developing in a certain direction, I throw in the monkey-wrench". UNIVERSE FUSION. My intention in creating music is to stimulate spiritual thought, feeling & action through sound. A sort of sonic parable: love, struggle, awe of the universe, the wonder of nature, represented with fantastic aural imagery to engage the listener within a transcendent experience. Vast, diverse and often hard to catagorize, the music combines a soulful emotional presence with strangly unfamiliar stylings. Although my primary instrument is the guitar, I compose and perform on a wide variety of instuments and sound sources. I am an experimenter, and love to jam with others. I prefer the recorded medium, likening it to a painters canvas. Conversely, my music always contains a high degree of improvisation, and I have performed for many years throughout the Spokane area. |

Artist History
I have performed, recorded and studied music for approximately 15 years, listening to and absorbing sounds spanning the musical spectrum, as well as undertaking studies in sound physics, esoteric music theory and many conventional approaches and practices. I am the head producer at Perimeter Sound Arts, and have worked in a wide variety of genres ranging from Rock-Blues-Funk Fusion bands to Electronic, Experimental and World-influenced Ambient projects. I have helped produce other artists ranging from Hip-hop to Folk and many diverse genres. With the bands I have played in, my solo offerings, and work with others, I have built a reputation as an original, eclectic musician. ##################################### My recording career began in 1991 with a group called Imagine Messiah. Our full-length album "The Rage of Living" explored areas from Funk, Rock, Jazz and World Music. The group included Nathan Chappell-Guitar and Bass and Lance Roethle-Drums and Percussion. From there I went on to build my studio, then known as Mutable Identity Sound, and began recording music with many collaborators including Roethle, Chappell, Seth Sutherlin, Matt Kelly, and my wife Ellicia. The albums “Air Sculpture”, “Glimpse” and “Origins” represent music from this time period and take on a more instrumental and experimental direction. "Imagine Messiah" continued in several incarnations. Some of these jams can be heard on "Instigations", along with some pieces by the Jazz-Fusion trio the Balance (in which I played bass (1995)), and a few other improvisations. In 1997 the studio name was changed to the current Perimeter Sound Arts (www.perimetersound.com), and I began working with the Bent Creatures, consisting of Josh Caviness-Bass, Antone Brazille-Drums, Marc Langeman-Percussion and Myself on Guitar and Vocals. We played around the area for 8-9 months and recorded the album “the Bent Creatures”. We were joined on the recording by Eddy “Spaghetti” Gavaress on Sax and Flute. The Bent Creatures were highly improvisational and tended toward experimental Funk Fusion. The album “Improvisation” includes 3 additional Bent jams along with 3 duets between Mr. Langeman and Myself. After the Bent Creatures I continued with my studio explorations yielding “The Present Past” and began to collaborate with electronic programming artist Adam Larson to form Earthwyrm. The relationship continues, and we have recorded two albums so far: “Dragon Dance” and “Space Heater”. You can find the music and more information on Earthwyrm at http://www.mp3.com/earthwyrm. During this time I also began performing as a solo artist and recorded “Lucid” with help again from Marc Langeman and Ellicia Milne. “Lucid” and the Earthwyrm projects contain definitive examples of my “melodic improvisation over loops” approach that is further developed on the follow up “A Sense of Wonder”. I am currently working on a new solo project called "Dervish" featuring many talanted guests, and producing the new "Lost Souls" album from Indakus and Sandman (www.mp3.com/lostsoulz). In 2000/01 I performed with the Improvisational Rock group "Influential Dreams". Check "ID" out at http://www.mp3.com/influential dreams. |
