Artist description
Punk rock. Beer. Simple. If you know Kudzu Ganja, then you understand why the preceding was pretty much the most representative thing that will ever be written about them. For the last four years, Kudzu Ganja has played the role of Charlotte's official punk rock party band. Through all the ups and downs, the lineup changes, the break-ups, the reformations and, yes, the occasional fistfight, one thing has remained paramount. No matter how surreal a show has become, the band has dished out some of the most electrically charged power/positive/pot punk ever to make a crowd leap about until they collapsed where they stood or flopped over the bar in pursuit of another beer. -- Chainsaw, Tangents Magazine |

Artist History
Kudzu Ganja's highway to hell (otherwise known as Charlotte, NC) began in 1992, when guitarist Jeff Floyd and bassist Bo Brown (both formerly of Subculture) met drummer Bryant Thomsen, and the three discovered that they had the same parole officer. As part of their work release program, the band released El Demo Cheapo in 1992 and What A Fucked Up Summer in 1995. After losing several guitarists to a series of bizarre gardening accidents, the band decided to eliminate the middleman and make their newly-appointed parole officer, Dave Vause (formerly of Spite), a permanent member of the band in 1996. From this new collaboration sprang the band's recent release of their first full-length CD, Another Trip To The Pawnshop, as well as the "bonus" EP, Livermush in 1997.Kudzu has described as the "ultimate punk party band," mixing punk and funk with more alcohol than most humans and some elephants can stand. "It starts out kinda loud," says Brown. "Then it kicks in and gets louder. Then we scream." --Daniel Coston--
UPDATE- - - ...and then in October 1998, Kudzu Ganja split up. |

Press Reviews
With the release of their new album, Another Trip to the Pawnshop, this Charlotte punk quartet has upped the garage rock ante by about a hundred fold. Clearly a band that savors tonal chaos and textural experimentation, KG set out to explore 19 individual sonic realms with big, furry guitars and numerous, unpredictable vocal layers. While the powerful, crunching layers of “Baggage” verve wildly in homage to Nirvana’s cancerous grunge, “Made To Bend” offers up a bouncing slab of spindly, psychedelic goodness, while “World” shreds around their plush, punk-rock carpet. Meanwhile, the comical gobbits of B-movie dialogue and trash talking interspersed between songs and hairy ‘ol Chainsaw on the CD’s cover continue to showcase the band’s versatility and poignant humor. KG have opened the new year with a colossal bang, and raised the bar on all of their garage band compatriots. -Todd Bowman Creative Loafing |
