Artist description
Dave Taylor was born and raised in "cow-town" Calgary Alberta and to this day proudly wears the flaming "C". Growing up, Dave studied piano with "The Toronto Conservatory of Music" from the age of six to sixteen. He picked up the electric guitar at sixteen when he began composing songs and has played it ever since, alongside the piano and organ.
Dave moved to Vancouver in 1991. In 1993 Dave founded the Vancouver group Big Cookie. Big Cookie released 4 albums and 2 music videos in 7 years and toured Western Canada 5 times over that time frame. Dave also played and toured with Vancouver's (now Montreal's) Biffy Perdu in the late 90's.
While in Vancouver, Dave opened a recording service called "Red eMusic" while working for Vancouver's "Greenhouse Studios". In 1995 David became a freelance independent record producer and worked on over 20 recordings from 1995-2000 (notables: Geoff Berner, Green Room and Malarkey).
In January 2000, Dave decided to make a life change. He moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in April with life partner Russ and set up another Red eMusic production office there. He currently works at Talking Dog Post and Sound Studios in Regina as a Foley engineer / artist for TV and film. Dave also continues to produce music in Regina, having now worked with Michelle Boudreau, Tyler Banadyga. Sylvie, Despistado, November Samurai, Jay Leveque, Fight the Monster, Jasmine Whenham, DSM, Divine Chaos, Fight the Monster and Dave Lang to date.
While in Vancouver, Dave compiled a 16-band compilation CD (W.A.V.E) in the mp3 file format and posted it online. The purpose was to attain notoriety for the beleaguered local music scene. It worked. It features some of Vancouver's finest acts and received national attention on the CTV network and Much Music. Dave continues working at promoting local music, now the Regina scene, the best undiscovered independent music scene in the country. "Musical Chairs" is set to commence this spring.
Dave starting playing in the Regina group Dollar Store Mary in January 2000 (releasing an EP in 2002) and with Dave Lang and the Man Band in May 2002 (new EP is forthcoming). Dave toured Western Canada again in 2002 with Regina's Michelle Boudreau and Tyler Banadyga.
Dave Taylor has, to date has released 2 solo EP's I'm Pretty (2001) and I'm Still Pretty (2002). He will be releasing his 3rd solo album (and 8th official release) this April, with another Western Canadian tour set for mid April 2003. The new album will be another departure for Dave. Big Cookie and Dollar Store Mary's releases were full of slick production, vocal layering, and countless overdubs. Dave's 2 previous solo recordings were very bare bones and rough around the edges, an obvious departure. This time out, Dave will be releasing a live-off-the-floor recording featuring his new line6 pedal. Dave has 10 new songs he will be recording with slick production and vocal layeringÉthe only difference being that all the vocal parts will be recorded in real time. This pedal enables Dave to sing 2,3,4,10,20 part vocal harmonies live as well as vocalized drum loops. This recording will be made in one take. A 30+ minute performance played to various musical friends from the Regina music scene at "Dave's Bar and Grill" studios. This new recording will demonstrate, on record, what it is that Dave Taylor now does on stage; live, fully arranged recordings. In this way Dave Taylor can finally realize the material he hears inside his own head and the audience gets a true live performance piece original to that moment in time.
Over the years Dave Taylor, with various groups and alone has shared stages with the likes of: Danny Michel, Limblifter, The New Pornographers, The Northern Pikes, Wide Mouth Mason, Geoff Berner, Ember Swift, Bob Kemmis, Painting Daisies, Jazzberry Ram, Joel Faffard, Odetta, Breach of Trust and many moreT
Quotes:
“The man is hot wired to the void. This is the stuff of dreams made real.â€
-Bob Wiseman, singer songwriter. Toronto
"Taylor brings the singer-songwriter into the 21st century. He builds lush sequences from the ground up, right before your eyes. It's hard to believe that one guy can sound so fat."
-Andrew Yates, freelance journalist
i first met dave at an open mic. i used to host. he sang a song that said the word fuck. i was hooked from then on( in fact i requested he play that song at every open mic til everyone was sick of it, even dave....i still can't get enough though cause that's just the way daves' songs are to me...)
a year and half later i came across ol' dave playing a solo show at a cafe/bar in town...and he had this pedal thingy...he didn't say fuck right off the bat...but he didn't need to...when the appropriate song/moment came he just put his foot down and BAM...three part harmony BAM, BAM, BAM...saying fuck... wow...i mean if that's not what rock n' roll is about...then i don't know what is( in three part harmony no less! )...add to that snappy hooks, witty lyrcs and a genuine willingness to have a good time, anytime and you've got a rare combination of explosive fun...

Quote: "Dave Taylor is a natural. He doesn't just sing, his voice soars.
He doesn't just strum the guitar, he plays wonderful lead guitar. He plays
keys. He produces. He engineers. He arranges. And above all, he doesn't
just write good songs, he writes songs about tough and controversial ideas,
with melodies that will stick in your head for years after the first listen.
It's a bit discouraging for the rest of us sometimes, I must say."
Geoff Berner - Singer/Songwriter
Biffy Says: "In a 'play it like it was' age David Taylor balances craftsmanship with innovation as he redefines the concept of the one-man-band. Taylor's mindbending new take on rock and roll will leave you stunned, fulfilled and damn near weeping. Here, now, before you is a once in a decade talent of unfathomable magnitude. His music deserves immense popularity."
Biffy Perdu - Singer/Taxidermist
