Artist description Barata was founded in January 1999 in Schiedam/Holland. Started as a cover band of songs mainly written by Sepultura and Biohazard, they soon started writing their own songs. In April 1999 Merijn Poolman (lead guitar) joined the band and they officially became BARATA, a unique hardcore/crossover band. After a year of rehearsing and writing they won the 3rd price in a local pop/rock contest. In February and March 2001 they recorded their first CD entitled “Grinding” at the Threnody Studio in Schiedam/Holland. Mixing was done by the keyboard player from Within Temptation. Right after the release of the CD Victor deceided to quit BARATA - In May 2001 a new drummer was found: Yuri Geeraths. New line-up: [Chester Jansen (guitars + vocals)] [Merijn Poolman (guitars)] [Peter Feddes (bass + vocals)] [Yuri Geeraths (drums)] The style of the music is best described as hardcore/crossover, as the band is mainly inspired by bands like Sepultura and Machine Head. Nevertheless, some people and magazines prefer to call it “nu-metal” which is an acceptable term also. The name Barata was chosen from a Portuguese word, which means 'cockroach'. A cockroach is known to be the only species on earth that can survive a nuclear blast.
